INTERVIEW: Neil Young Still Brings Art From The Heart | Yahoo! Music

An interview with Neil Young from Yahoo! Music:

“From where I stand, I feel pretty strong. I don’t feel like I’ve got a lot of years, but I don’t feel old,” he tells Yahoo Music. “And I don’t feel fatigued about what I’m doing and about who I’m playing with.”

“We’re gonna go there and rock out!” is Young’s only agenda for their Saturday show alongside McCartney. “We have no plans for what we’re gonna play, and we won’t know what we’re gonna play until we walk out there. And we don’t know how long the songs are gonna be, and we don’t know whether were gonna play acoustic at all or whether we’re just gonna play electric. We don’t know what we’re going to do at all — and we don’t care. Because we never know.”

On Earth album: “It’s kind of a lost art, the concept album. There’s really no need for that in today’s civilization — except for me. I feel that I needed to do it.” As for whether today’s music buyers have the patience for a 98-minute experimental live album (featuring one epic track, “Love & Only Love,” that’s nearly a half-hour long), he shrugs: “It doesn’t really matter. The thing is, we make the record, we do what we do, we create the art, we finish the thing, we feel good about what we’ve done — and we move on. That’s what matters. … I’m not really a commercial success, in as much as, you know, I don’t sell millions of records. I have done all of these things, but now it’s more important for me to just do what I want to do. It’s more important that art live, and that the expression happens, than anything else.”

“You’re certainly not going to hear about [GMOs] on the news stations. … You don’t hear about the Monsanto problems on mainstream media, just like you don’t hear about Bernie Sanders in mainstream media,” Young says.

“You know, certain things are corporate-controlled. We’ve come to accept a democracy that’s really a ‘corporocracy’ or something. It’s not really democracy,” Young continues. “Because it’s controlled, paid for, and manipulated by corporations. … Corporations aren’t people. They don’t have consciences and they don’t have children. … I can’t ignore that, and I have nothing to gain from ignoring it.”

So what keeps him so energized? “I don’t have any laurels! My laurels are all missing. They’ve relaxed,” he laughs. “I don’t know, I just keep going … ’cause it’s fun.”
Reading the comments on Yahoo! Music brings out the usual "doubters" -- even the tired put down "A Southern man don't need you anyway" by a typical Yahoo named Bubba?!

It seems even the trolls' low standards are slipping.

Anywho. Once again, Neil is unfazed by the somewhat insipid questions and demonstrates his integrity is still intact and he could care less what folks think about his stance on GMO's and Monsanto. Neil still speaks truth to power which makes him a target as the Humanitarian Rebel With Causes that he is.

Neil's art is from the heart, as much as some folks think it comes from somewhere else.

  2. It was a million times better than the Colbert appearance. What was insipid about the questioning? What would you ask him? A lot of the Yahoo comments were positive and very respectful. Any "forum" is gonna bring out people who say stupid shit! I'm even more anxious to hear Earth now! 98 minutes sounds just about right.

  3. Old Neg, I recall a time when you weren't so crazy about this material. Personally, I have Monsanto Years on constantly while driving to and fro work. This album has grabbed my attention even more than Psychedelic Pill and Le Noise did, and that is a lot. In these times of Bernie Sanders, I find the material compelling and inspiring. I am hoping they hit the studio again together before long. Long live Neil Young!

  4. Neil flogging the same old stuff - it's a concept record of old songs with some sound effects? and we all follow this stuff ?

  6. @ TW thanks for your patience and understanding - please can someone explain what I'm missing here as a fan of 40 years plus it's passing me by...

  7. I hope he at least has set things up for someone to take the reins on the Archives project. Preferably before he leaves this earthly rustbucket. I get that he wants to focus on his new concepts and playing live, and I think he just has to loosen his grip on the Archives so that they can proceed while he does his thing.

  8. @Andy - Well, we've been here for 20 years almost everyday trying to help out as best we can. There's not really much more we can do to help.

That said, maybe watch the Colbert interview from last week again? It seems that Colbert clearly gets it.

If that still doesn't resonate, try this. Reach deep, breath, reflect and open your heart.

  9. Andy Walters asked: "can someone explain what I'm missing here as a fan of 40 years plus? It's passing me by."
    _______________________________________________________________

Andy, you're not missing anything and you're missing everything.

It's about expectations, perspective, understanding, joy, family, seeking, love, passion, freedom, individuality, belonging, doubting, fear, trust, anxiety, self expression, defiance and creativity.

It's clear you're not a fan of Neil's "recent" music, and that's fine. I think most objective fans agree that his recent output isn't up there with his classic works from the 60's, 70's, and parts of the 80's, 90's and so on....

That being said, most of us who frequent this blog are fans/fanatics who view Neil and his work looking out from behind rose-colored glasses. You on the other hand tend to view Neil and his work through s**t colored glasses, and that's your right.

You seem to revel in pointing out what Neil's music has lost rather than focusing on what we as fans have gained. To you and others, it appears you'd be happier if Neil's career ended 20+ years ago. Most of us are happy and grateful that Neil's been able to continue expressing himself through his evolutions and devolutions as the hands of time move inexorably forward. We find his live performances engaging, and at a minimum find various nuggets of enjoyment in much of his recent work.

Neil always has and always will do what he wants when he wants with wildly varying results. It's our choice to listen and enjoy, or listen and criticize or to not listen at all.

Personally, I find it beneficial to my well being to listen and enjoy. Like you, I'm a fan of 40 years and I can't imagine turning my back on Neil now. I've adjusted my expectations accordingly and still find myself inspired by Neil's independence and singularly unique voice.

He's the only musician who I feel I have a "personal" bond with, and he's been a part of my "family" virtually my entire life. Through good times and bad, Neil has been the ongoing soundtrack in my mind. I happily choose to have ALL of his music pulsating through my neurons and synapses while on continuous shuffle. Without Neil's music, my life would be a lonelier colder place, and I choose to embrace the warmth.

So, what are you missing? The answer lies within...

    Take my advice
    don't listen to me

  10. Yes Alan, I was bummed that Neil was charging so much for a live overdubbed album but that doesn't mean I won't listen to it! Hopefully, I'll put it on and leave it on.

These days Neil needs to get paid and I understand that. Divorce and a new girlfriend will do that to you. So I don't buy every album anymore. I used to for most of my life but I skipped Storytone and A Letter Home and I doubt I'm the only one. I am happy to see that Earth just dropped from $21 on Amazon down to a more reasonable $15 so yay!! The pre-orders must not have been selling that well? I'm in. Neil has thousands of dollars from me over my lifetime. What's $15 more?! But you've got to draw the line somewhere. I liked Neil more when he wasn't so artsy fartsy so shoot me. That's how I feel. He's got to keep that revenue stream flowing somehow. Doesn't mean I have to like it or buy it.

I think Neil still has some studio gems left in him. I'm actually one of those that likes the Monsanto record, regardless of some of the lyrics. It's got a great groove. People Wanna Hear About Love gets stuck in my head ALL of the time. But I'm not buying every album anymore until I hear it first. I'll probably make an exception for Earth though, especially now that the price has dropped. If it puts me to sleep, fine. Greendale chills me out like that too! And I LOVE Greendale. And I'll drop a hundred bucks to stand in a field and see him live anytime. But the Desert Trip, no interest in attending. Would love for a pay per view though!

Keep cranking them out Neil! Glad you don't feel that old. You sure don't act it.

Well, for starters, you're judging a record you haven't yet heard. That certainly effects the credibility of your opinion.

  12. you're right thrasher, I don't get blind worship. never have. however, I GET neil young. I get all his albums. I get tickets to all his tours. in fact, I've got his new album on pre order.

  13. Thanks everyone for the constructive replies, I wasn't commenting on the new record and yes I'm strongly of the view that the last few years have been a very barren period for Neil's song writing, that's a personal view only. If you've followed Neil for the last 40, or even 20 years then I'm sure what you say is heartfelt for me the music and songs don't cut it. Yes that personal bond that TopanagaDaze alludes to was there for many years but it's faded away for me with each new record. I wasn't seeking help as you won't change my mind as I won't change yours but the days of living with every Neil record are gone for me.
Good luck with Earth but like the last three records it's not for me.

  14. Old Neg, imho he doesn't make anything from the new records, they sell poorly (he addresses this in the yahoo video saying he doesn't care) and he's been touring less the past couple of years … the concert in the dessert basically fell from the sky (which may explain why elliot was so effusive) and i'm betting he'll make all the money he needs for the next few years by playing those two weekends. The audience is what like 60,000 people? I think he just played in Texas w POTR for an audience of 5,000.

My read is virtually all of his recording and touring decisions are artistically (vs. financially) driven but he won't turn away a windfall when it comes his way. Otherwise what financially minded person would produce a second ditch trilogy (LWW, FITR, Monsanto) at this stage of a career, its a guaranteed loser financially and I say that about Neil lovingly …

  15. Whatever motivates him is fine by me. Desert show is a well deserved payday for Neil. Maybe now he'll be able to afford lowering ticket prices to see him live?! Nah, probably not. Neil's making money off his records. Don't kid yourself. Define selling poorly. There's plenty of hard core Neil fans that will buy every album he puts out, regardless of what's on it. I'm just not one of them anymore.

  16. Don't kid yourself Old Neg, Neil struggles to sell records these days. Earth will be an especially difficult sell as it's another live album (albeit with a slight twist). I'm not an expert, but it will probably only sell around 50,000 units give or take.

    Take my advice
    don't listen to me

  17. Yeah, you're right TD. Guess he'll just have to keep on touring!

  18. I still have a couple of perfect seats spare for the London show at face value. Also 1 standing ticket. Saturday 11th June.

  19. Neil's last couple albums haven't sold
    well(Storytone 25,000, Monsanto 40,000)
and I don't think Earth will do any better
However as Neil said it doesn't matter
Touring has been and continues to be his
    Main income source.
I look forward to Earth more so than his last
Couple records although I do think Storeytone is much better than How it's been received
