Linda Ronstadt Cover of Neil Young's "Birds"
Linda Ronstadt covering Neil Young's "Birds" (from album After the Goldrush) on her 1972 self titled album.
Linda Ronstadt, with James Taylor, sang backup on "Heart of Gold" -- Neil Young's only number one hit single in his long musical career. Also, Ronstadt, with Nicolette Larson, sang on Neil Young's 1977 album, American Stars 'n Bars, with Linda Ronstadt on the tracks "Old Country Waltz", "Saddle Up the Palomino", "Bite the Bullet", "Hold Back the Tears", and "Hey Babe".
"Hanging on a Limb" and "The Ways of Love" on Freedom. (Thanks Jeff G.!)

This is one of Neil's best, and also one of his most neglected great songs.
ReplyDeleteBirds is easily one of Neil's best tunes ever and when you say that about a Neil song, that's big talk. Neil has written so many classic songs, well what is there to say. Too bad he didn't play it more back when he wrote it,powerful powerful song!
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with What Muddy and Richard Bay said. So much emotional intensity in this oft-overlooked gemstone. And beautiful Linda just KILLS with this version. She may not be a "song-writer" herself, but she picks the best of the best and makes them her own. "Blue Bayou" much?
ReplyDeleteHer voice will always echo a deep and profound love in my heart.
ReplyDeleteDitto "Love Is A Rose"!!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful version of Birds by the incomparable Ms. Ronstadt. It's been many years since I've listened to this; thanks so much for bringing it back home!
ReplyDeleteLinda was Rosemary Clooney's favorite singer, along with Billie Holiday. Angels do walk among us! I still have wonderful, vivid memories of seeing Linda and Emmy Lou performing in Boston back in 1999 as part of the Western Wall tour. Bought a single ticket at the last minute, and was rewarded with a "special seat" which was placed off the center about twelve rows back. Linda's solo performance of Heart Like A Wheel, performed near the end of the show, was totally sublime and still one of the greatest things I've ever seen or heard. The regular set closed with Feels Like Home...just amazing.
I was just looking at the Twitter account for the awesome Big Ears Festival, which is going on this weekend down in Knoxville. There's a wonderful picture of Terry Riley, David Harrington and Laurie Anderson backstage at The Tennessee Theater during last night's performance of Laurie's new work Landfall with The Kronos Quartet. I was supposed to be there with my good friend, celebrating his 60th birthday, but I'm still recovering from injuries sustained early this month (broken ribs and clavicle; assorted complications) when the icy Winter had its way with me. As Mr. Lennon tells us, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making plans." My friend is there, and it will be great to hear his stories...maybe some of you are there also?!
Speaking of "Birds", is anyone else following the eagles and their babies on the Berry College link? If not, I greatly encourage you to do so...B4 and B5 are starting to spread their wings big time, and it should not be very long before they "fly away without you"!

Rick: It's like this now; that's enough.

With a strange delight
And here it is
The enormous night

Thanks to all. Seems that Linda's covers of Neil songs are quite well loved. If someone finds a nice "Love Is A Rose" cover of hers, let us know and we'll post.
ReplyDeletedon't say it's over....
@Mr H. - must've been quite a show with Linda & Emmy Lou. Angels indeed.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck on your recovery from Old Man winter.
On to Mother Earth spring!
