UPDATE:
For Immediate Release:
NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE CANCEL CONCERT IN TEL AVIV
13th July, 2014 -- (BURBANK, CA) -- Due to the current security situation in Tel Aviv Israel, Neil Young & Crazy Horse have been forced to cancel their concert appearance originally scheduled for July 17th in Hayarkon Park.
A spokesperson for Young's camp said: "It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we must cancel our one and only Israeli concert due to tensions which have rendered the event unsafe at this time. We'll miss the opportunity to play for our fans and look forward to playing in Israel and Palestine in peace."
"I will be making donations to both the Louise Tillie Alpert Youth Music Centre of Israel, and Heartbeat", said Mr. Young, "two organizations that teach music to Palestinian and Israeli youth simultaneously by enabling them to play music together."
Last night, at Neil Young & Crazy Horse's concert in Hyde Park, London during the opening song "Love And Only Love", Neil inserted the phrase "free the people of Palestine".
Only hours later, according to JPost.com, Neil Young's upcoming Tel-Aviv, Israel concert was canceled. The reason being cited is “The cancelation is due to the barrage of rockets that have been fired in recent days and the concern for the safety of an audience for such an event.”
Around the world, this announcement is being met by many with ridicule over the irony and unmitigated hypocrisy. Of course, anyone who isn't following the "mass media fear based propaganda matrix" knows this is a laughable excuse and that rockets are not pounding Tel Aviv and concert goers have little to worry about in terms of safety.
Earlier this month, we posted on the whole issue of Neil Young's Upcoming Tel-Aviv, Israel Concert: "Don't Feel Like Satan But I Am To Them", which included background, context, reader comments and a poll. The poll results are displayed above and clearly the majority of fans want the concert to go forward.
Just prior to the cancellation notice, Roger Waters released Open Letter to Neil Young:
In light of the appalling recent events in Israel and Gaza and my dismay at the the lack of any response from our governments and in a final appeal to Neil's possible attachment to the rights of all human beings, not just the disenfranchised natives of North America, but all human beings all over the world, I am publishing that letter now.Just an aside, but Roger don't hold your breath on the invite.
Here it Is.
Dear Neil Young.
There are rumors flying about that you are considering doing shows in Tel Aviv this year.
The picket lines have been crossed in this last year by one or two lightweights from our community but no one of your stature. Woody Guthrie would turn in his grave. Neil Young! You are one of my biggest heroes, you are one of a very short list, you, John Lennon, Woody Guthrie, Huddy Ledbetter, Harry Belafonte, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday and, like some others, but not many, your songs have always been redolent of love and humanity and compassion for your fellow man and woman. I find it hard to believe that you would turn your back on the indigenous people of Palestine. That you would lend support to, and encourage and legitimize, with your presence, a colonial apartheid regime, largely settled from Europe, that seeks to confine the native people of the land, either in exile or in second class status in reservations and ghettos.
Please, brother, tell me it ain't so.
As I recall, back in the day, along with the rest of us (Stevie van Zandt, Bruce, Led Zep etc etc etc etc) you would not "Play In Sun City" I am asking you to stand on the same moral ground now. The late, great, Nelson Mandela lives on in us, we cannot let him down. He was explicit in his position and I quote, " We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians". It is time for "Rock Against Racism" to show some of it's muscle by refusing to lend our names to the whitewashing of the illegal colonization of Palestinian land and the systematic oppression of its indigenous people. Unfortunately the opposition lobby has a lot of muscle too. They spend millions on their "Hasbara"(If like me you have no Hebrew)”Explaining” or to you and me "Propaganda". The propaganda machine is well oiled and ruthless. We, on the other hand, have only our commitment to non-violent resistance to lie down in front of the IDF caterpillar tractors that would raze the native people from the land of Palestine. We stand with those people, and with all the brave people of Israel and Palestine, Jewish and Arab alike who oppose The Israeli Governments brutal policies. We stand with Rachel Corrie, the young American woman who gave her life under the caterpillar's tracks. Please join me and countless other artists all over the world in solidarity with the oppressed and the disenfranchised. It is time to heed the peoples call. People like The Bedouin, the nomadic people of the Negev in the arid south of Israel, please research their plight, one village, Al-Araqib has been destroyed 63 times by IDF Bulldozers. If you are in doubt about any of this, I will go with you to Palestine, and Israel, if they’ll let me in, you will see what I have seen, and then let us figure out the right thing to do.
By the way I watched your Bridge School concert on YouTube last year, it was very moving, you were, of course magnificent. You had asked me to perform, and as I explained to your management, I would have gladly done so had I not already been committed to The Wall Tour in Europe and Stand Up For Heroes in New York. This year I will be pleased and proud to come and support you if you call.
With respect, and love.
Roger Waters.
Back on subject, if ever there was a concert audience that needed to hear songs like Love And Only Love, Blowin' In The Wind, Rockin' In The Free World, among others, it was the audience this concert was intended.
So much for peace when music is just more "collateral damage".
On the other hand, maybe Neil will invite Roger to Bridge? Maybe re-schedule the Tel-Aviv, Israel concert for Shoreline? How about it?
Istanbul concert still on for now... likewise for Rolling Stones in Israel...
"Nobody's free until everybody's free."
~~ Fannie Lou Hamer
In the meantime, here's the original poll, flawed and outdated as it might be at this point...
So can't we all just keep on Rockin' In The Free World, O.K.?

Love an only love. Neil Young fans know that only message he is delivering is love & peace. I understand this desicion was done in the name of safety. Rockets from Gaza can hit Tel Aviv. Idea having concert there really shows that NY is following news and in my opinion his agenda was to deliver message of peace to everyone in the area.
ReplyDeleteWilfulness in art is admirable but not in support of genocide.
ReplyDeleteEven the UN, usually craven in the face of US puppets, has emitted a whimper of protest at the ongoing Israeli killing of children.
The truly great admit they may be wrong and change their minds. They don’t just sing about doing that.
So the organizers saved his face while he stsyed silent. There are a very large unmber of people who feel betrayed. Shame on you Neil.
The Jews have been persecuted going back to antiquity & it continues to this day. Israel is surrounded by numerous enemies whose only goal is to drive them into the sea. Roger Waters is just another anti-Semite in a long line of them. I wonder if Roger would defend his mansion if it was being bombarded by rockets & his children were being kidnapped, tortured, and murdered.
ReplyDeleteNEWS FLASH!
ReplyDeleteNOT SURPRISED.
I'm with Neil on this one.
I'd rather be Wrong and Alive then DEAD WRONG.
Just please lose that Roger Waters fisting pic!
btw if someone shoots at me, I'm shootin' back. and I wouldn't use my wife and kids as human shields.
Just say'n.
Of course Jewish people have been persecuted for centuries. For me, that just makes it particularly sad that they have turned into the persecutors. The outcome for Neil's concert seems like a copout all round. Still very disappointed in him. I do feel sorry for the fans that would have been going to see him but they have their own government's policies to blame.
ReplyDeleteIf ever I was tempted to keep my mouth shut about a convergence of issues such as this one (and I've never been very successful following that temptation), it would be this one. It's simply impossible to do full justice to even one of the issues contained within this whole set of circumstance in one silly little comment. But really, sometimes you just have to laugh.
ReplyDeleteWere the standard applied here by those siding against Israel vis a vis their admittedly repugnant policies towards that lands indigenous population to be applied uniformly across the board, Neil would not be able to perform in any number of places right here in the US, starting with my home town of Detroit. I won't bore you with the details of this regions treatment of its own indigenous peoples, starting with the Indian nations that got wiped out to make way for the French, English, and later colonists, or with stories of how blacks have been treated over the years, right down to the importation of southern whites to man the police departments as a ruthless tactic in an overall strategy of oppression. Eerily similar things could be said about virtually every major city Neil has toured over the years.
I have the decency not to mention the details of this countries foreign policy over the years which, most laughably of all, given the national origin of Roger Waters, we learned as they say, from the best!
There is not a racial group on the map that has not at one time been a captive, discriminated against group. There is not one country on the face of the earth that does not labor under the tyranny of Central Banking (with the exception of Iran and North Korea- after the not coincidental dismantlement of Iraq and Libya). I could go on and on.
I don't have to be a defender of Israel, which I am not, or turn a blind eye to the sometimes egregious tactics of those groups opposing it, to recognize simple hypocrisy when I see it. If there is a nation, a people, a religion, or any single individual on the face of this earth who can sleep peacefully in a glass house, then I will willingly listen to this or that argument in the context of this post. Saving that, until I am proven wrong, I will abide by whatever reasoning Neil had for thinking that a stop in Israel fit into his vision of his work, and not pretend to know why. If it had something to do with a message of love, or the recognition that no matter how easy it is to vilify or adore any given people or country- depending on what side of the conflict you reside- or that people are people no matter where they are, that they all have intrinsic dignity, they are all God's children, they are all susceptible to a change of heart and mind, or any other hopeful message, then great for Neil. As I say, I don’t know, but still trust him regardless.
I don’t mean to dismiss Roger out of hand, or anyone else who feels strongly about these things. I think they are mostly sincere, and in many instances have very good rationales for their views and their advocacy, but after a while people like Neil would be captive to a paralysis resulting from trying to please everyone, and never leave his ranch. He has a vision, his energy, his heart, and his music to move about as he sees fit. I think he has earned every benefit of our doubts.
A Friend Of Yours
Shouted by Neil Young during last night's gig at Hyde Park: "free the people of Palestine"
ReplyDeleteHis passion was clear, as is often the case, he is right. While Israel keeps a entire nation of people in poverty and refuses to acknowledge their right to nationhood and freedom, they should be boycotted. It does not in any way justify acts of terrorism, which I condemn. But anger is justified.
Shouted during a superb version of 'love and only love' I might add!
ReplyDeleteThanks to all for the civil discussion.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you Greg. No apologies necessary for speaking up on vital issues.
As we know, there is way too much apathy and silence on not only this issue but many, many other vital issues.
So good for you on ignoring that false idiom not to discuss politics and religion but freely expressing your opinion. Sadly, more don't speak up about injustices.
"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
~~Martin Luther King Jr.
I noticed this response wasn't offered in the poll - it's OK with me because I agree with US/Israel policy.
ReplyDeletePersonally I am in the "it's all about the music camp" and wonder, if one opposes US/Israel policy if they also should not play in the US. It is a complex issue with valid points on both sides and disastrous policies on both sides. I don't think a Neil Young concert tips things much either way.
But an honest survey would allow one to agree or disagree with the policy, not assume disagreement.
I'm so glad that Neil has decided not to play in Israel!
ReplyDeleteI hope he is actually doing it for principled reasons, but even if it is just for the reason stated at least his presence won't be there.
Hard to believe that in 2014 some people cling to the notion that Israel just wants to "live in peace" and is surrounded by hostile neighbours who throw rocks and grenades.
Yet the facts show that Israel is committing the overwhelming majority of the violence. For every Israeli killed, at least 10 Palestinians are killed.
Israel continues to do everything it can to block a Palestinian state, and continues to bulldoze the homes of people who have lived on the land for generations. All in violation of UN resolutions and contrary to the opinion of the majority of the world's people.
Sadly the news media in the US and its allies continue to show nothing but images of Palestinians throwing rocks, and present an ahistorical pro-Israel narrative. It's no wonder some people believe the lies.
BDS campaigns can't be applied to every country in the world, but they have been shown to be effective in drawing attention to particular issues. It worked in South Africa among other places. I really hope Neil has become more informed on the issue and supports the boycott.
Thank you Thrasher for not shying away from the subject and providing a forum that allows people to express their point of view, whatever it may be.
peace!

@raincheck - it's a fair point. We discussed our flawed methodology on original poll in the comments. Yes, the questions could've/should've been better phrased.
ReplyDeleteAs for interpreting poll, we think choice #1 though covers this response.
Incidentally, we've fired the entire TW polling staff and looking for replacements. Volunteering???
@Nick - thanks for comment. But not sure you can say Neil canceled the concert? It appears that the decision was made by the Israeli gov't.
ReplyDeleteNeil said it best himself years ago:
ReplyDelete"Take my advice, don't listen to me"
That couplet says it all clearly and concisely. I don't think there's one person (or group of people) that at a given time haven't strongly disagreed with Neil, his music, ideas, beliefs and/or his statements. Our hero is to say the least consistently inconsistent.
I am a defender of Israel. Historically (and presently) they have done what's needed to survive and thrive. And yes, they are the most open and only democracy in the Middle East, warts and all. One gets a unique perspective when surrounded by sworn enemies intent on one thing only: the destruction of your State. I find it difficult to sympathize with the Palestinians who have chosen to historically align with Arafat and Hamas--Enough said.
So, while I disagree with Neil cancelling his concert in Israel, others disagree with him for not making more of a statement. No winners here...
Tomorrow will be another day and we'll have something else (better or worse) to "occupy" our thoughts.
Take Neil's advice, don't listen to him. (Though if you must, focus on his music, not his political statements/non-statements.) He's a little "Shakey" on that ground...
Shalom.
@TopangaDaze - agree that no one should be forming their opinions off of Neil's position but rather their own heart based research.
ReplyDeleteNo one wins. It's a war of man.
fyi - just updated post with a statement by Neil. Looks like Neil threads the needle once again.
Thanks Thrasher, for you comment and all you do for us Neil fans.
ReplyDeletePlease don't fire any of your massive polling staff over this.
Have to say it is so wonderful to see Neil playing such great, interesting, challenging shows in 2014. One of a kind.
Thanks Raincheck.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, if you want to take a crack at another poll, we'll be happy to post later this week on the date of the scheduled Tel Aviv concert.
You -- or anyone -- can send suggested poll question and responses to:

I don't want to purposely insert a left vs. right paradigm into this situation, but I'll just call it out as I see it.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that those on the left of American/worldwide politics condemn Israel & abide by the mantra of "free Palestine"?
Why is it that those on the right support Israel?
There is empirical evidence to support the two assertions I just made.
I think Greg had a well-thought out brief dissection of an extremely complicated scenario and I agree that it's way too much for a comment board. But I cringe when I see Neil, once again, coming down on the wrong side of things.
If the far left supports something, evil usually isn't too far behind. No that isn't a universal statement. But it's generally true.
Nazis = leftists.
Communists = leftists.
Palestinians = supported by leftists...does Neil realize how the Palestinians treat their women? Do the left-wing radicals care about Sharia law & what that implies in terms of human freedom?
sad...
ambulance blues all throughout the fallen world...
Thrasher,
ReplyDeleteHat's off to you to for facilitating a civil dialog on this complex topic and for opening up the polling design to volunteers :)
At the end of the day its all one war (against terror) ... not sure the post 9-11 reaction to invade Iraq made much sense ... government's confronting this terrorist evil are faced with few good options ... Hamas = Muslim Brotherhood = Al Qaeda ... this is asymmetric warfare whereby the terrorists target innocent civilians, 'i.e.' 9-11, the three boys kidnapped and murdered in Israel ... then they use their civilian populations as human shields to protect themselves against retaliation ... its a terrible enemy to do battle with and he's getting stronger (look at ISIS in Iraq and Syria) ... I wish I had the solution but I don't .. what is a fact is that muslims in Israel proper have a better life than in almost any other muslim country in the middle east ... women are treated equally and respectfully, there is no religious coercion, there is rule of law ... if the Palestinian leadership would simply throw their hatred down and throw their weapons down they might find to their surprise that they can co-exist peacefully side by side with the Israelis just as many of the muslims who live in Israel today co-exist there peacefully and in prosperity ... if the starting point is that Israel must be wiped off the map, as the Hamas' charter suggests, its hard to be optimistic that things will improve ... its silly and simplistic in a conflict to blame one side 100% so not trying to blame the Palestinan Islamisists completely but as Albert Einstein once said, "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result" ... or as Neil Young once said, "no one wins its a war of man" ... I think if they tried to negotiate in good faith they'd be surprised with the result ...
FWIW Neil didn't cancel the show, the authorities did:
ReplyDeleteIsraeli authorities cancel Neil Young's gig due to Gaza rocket fire:
http://news.yahoo.com/israeli-authorities-cancel-neil-youngs-gig-due-gaza-101602885.html
@Jonathan - for years now, we've been going back & forth on this right/left dichotomy. It's a false paradigm that you're falling into as a trap.
ReplyDeleteThis issue is so beyond R/L that it's not even funny.
Try and rise above the divide & conquer mentality and embrace the center of coexistence.
namaste
@Dan1 - thanks, we try. This one has been a challenge. It is quite regrettable after all the verbiage that's been spilled over this concert, that now it has been canceled and the music was never played for an audience desperate for its message.
Your clarification is important... Neil didn't cancel out fear, the Israel gov't canceled out of fear. Fear that Neil might say something from the stage like he did in London. That's what Israel truly fears -- the truth.
Everyone informed on this issue knows that the "safety" excuse is BS.
Courage -- not fear -- will get us all there someday.
"First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."
~~ Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945
Thrasher,
ReplyDeleteLast I checked Hamas is sending over 100 missles a day into civilian areas and trying to hard to hit Tel Aviv. Right now Israelis are spending time in bomb shelters and many events are being cancelled ... my assumption when I read that the concert was cancelled was that it was 100% a safety issue ... Israel is a democratic country with a vibrant left wing movement that does not shy away from voicing their views even at the expense of national security ... some people don't like it but its the cost of freedom ... in that vein its unlikely that they've cancelled the concert out of fear that Neil will say something embarrassing ... if anything, to me the cancellation shows that Terror, in this case Palestinian terror, has been successful in shutting down freedoms and at its core, that is the agenda of terrorists, to take away freedoms and impose their radical and dangerous ideology on the masses ... I'm going to post a frightening news clip I just saw, I have a feeing both the left and right can unite abound this threat, because its truly not about right and left but about right and wrong.
Peace
This is a must watch ... can we all agree this is not a happy vision of the future?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cbn.com/tv/embedplayer.aspx?bcid=1509282970001
What a strangely contradictory letter from Roger Waters. Castigating bad, bad Neil, while at the same time, almost as an afterthought, solliciting for the spot lights (please, good Neil, can't I please perform?). Telling. And pretty disgusting.
ReplyDelete@Jonathan: I've already said my piece so I won't add more, but I couldn't let your comment that "Nazis = leftists" go unanswered. The Nazis were NOT leftists, they were on the far right. Just because the word Nazism loosely translates to "national socialism" doesn't mean it bears any resemblance to what we today mean by socialism. Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union because Hitler reviled any form of socialism or communism.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree with your implication that communism is evil, but you are correct that communism is a movement of the left. Nazism, however, was definitely a movement of the far-right. But as Thrasher rightly pointed out, the issue of Israel/Palestine goes beyond the traditional left-right dichotomy.
cheers,
nick
It truly disturbs me that Neil shouted:
ReplyDelete"free the people of Palestine"
It is a fairly popular sentiment and a very simplistic idea to embrace. Sure, everyone should be completely free... but,
The Palestinian people and their leaders have had had several chances over the years. Each time they have chosen to inflame tensions attempting to achieve their only goal: the destruction of Israel. They have repeatedly failed and will continue to do so.
Maybe they should go to one of the many Arab countries that supports them. Oh wait, that's right, not one Arab country will let them in. I wonder...
This is obviously an emotional issue for most people, but it's important to know at least a little history and apply its lessons today. Israel does have its flaws (just as America does). But on balance both countries are examples of tolerance and humanity despite isolated incidents. Reality must not be twisted to sympathize with (or worse, support) the Terrorists.
My next post will be about the music. Now that's something we can all easily agree/disagree with harmoniously!
Thrasher,
ReplyDeleteYour comments during the thread led me to do some sleuthing ... I was curious to see if I could find any info about WHY the Israeli government had cancelled Thursday's show in Tel Aviv ... in other words were they really afraid for Neil's and the band's and the fans safety (as reported) or was something more sinister afoot, as some suggested ...
I then came across on a Twitter account, @jeremykopite , which is highlighted in your photo essay above showing a picture which purports to be from a demonstration outside Neil's in Liverpool last night ... if you read @jeremykopite 's recent tweets it seems clear that the Tel Aviv show was cancelled PRIOR to the Liverpool show, not after as some wanted to suggest (more on this in a second) ... this foots with the narrative that suggests with Gaza terrorists firing indiscriminate missiles toward Tel Aviv, civilians are utilizing shelters and events are being cancelled, including Neil's much anticipated show.
Specifically, @Jeremykopite has a tweet from yesterday that reads as follows, " Neil Young's Tel-Aviv trip cancelled. Liverpool demo still on thogh(sic), 6pm today at Echo Arena ..." pretty clear evidence that the Tel Aviv show was cancelled prior to Neil going on stage.
And in fact, one might hypothesize that Neil adjusted the lyrics of LAOL because, due to terrorist risks, he was basically silenced from expressing himself in Israel as he had so deliberately intended (by valiantly refusing to bow to the intense pressure he was receiving to cancel) ...
The donations Neil made suggest he sees music as a unifier here and rejects the approach of BDS and Roger Waters which are just another form of warfare, and which are misplaced in this circumstance ... On its face it seems Neil's approach is broader and more visionary, making a donation to music that can unify, and hence seeking to create peace rather than further divide ... Roger Waters, in trying to publicly shame Neil by releasing his letter and tell the world that Neil didn't respond now looks (deservedly) foolish and ignorant ... while Neil comes off as thoughtful and caring ...
This gets at what Neil meant with his shout during LAOL ... its not clear but perhaps he meant to suggest free all the peoples, color, race, religion, from violence and terrorism which prevents true peace from taking root ... 'i.e.' the answer is not firing more indiscriminate missies into civilian population centers nor is it tit for tat retaliations nor is it boycotts (BDS), nor is it Drunken rants (Eddie we love your music, but you've still got a lot to learn from uncle Neil) ...
And for for those who assumed the worst about Israel's motives for canceling the show, perhaps its a reminder of how easy it is to caricature and malign an assumed perpetrator, unfairly ... perhaps its worth taking pause and sincerely rethinking perspectives on this tragic conflict.
Peace
Well researched and stated Dan1.
ReplyDeleteTo date, Israel really hasn't been known to censor speech and ideas (in whatever form). It's interesting how reality can be distorted to conform with ones beliefs (and that applies to everyone, including me).
In this instance I'm quite certain safety was the primary purpose for the cancellation. After all, the majority of Israel's sleeping in bomb shelters during these tensions.
@Dan1 - great detective work there. the timeline is important. thanks for details & link.
ReplyDeletealthough they say the 1st casualty of war is truth.
no one wins a war of man
@TopangaDave -- you are truly ignorant of the facts.
ReplyDeleteIsrael is a disgrace. That Neil was going to tour there is also a disgrace. But I put it down to ignorance on Neil's part. If he really knew what goes on there, he'd never consider touring. I have to believe that.
This has been a very unequal conflict for a long time.
ReplyDeleteResult of the current bombings:
Palestinian deads: 200
Israeli deads: 1
Glen,

---------------------------------
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm quite certain you're every bit as ignorant as I am.
So, what are your thoughts on Hamas rejecting the cease-fire? I believe Israel accepted it and stopped all attacks, while Hamas continued to fire. Of course I'm ignorant, so I'm sure you'll enlighten me as to why the Palestinians and Hamas rejected it.
Please explain it to me so that perhaps I can become less ignorant.
Easy now. Please try and keep it civil.
ReplyDeleteTrust us -- we are all ignorant.
Paul D,
ReplyDeleteCivilian injuries and deaths on either side during conflicts are 100% tragic, that's something we can all agree on ... your point about the number of casualties was addressed by Alan Dershowitz in an article, I urge you to read it with an open mind ...
Looking forward to discussing happier subjects on TW.
Dershowitz article here:

@ Dan1 You suggest me to read that article in The Jerusalem Post.
ReplyDeleteC'mon, this has nothing to do with serious journalism.
I am from Vancouver,Canada and I wanted to say that it was a good idea to cancel the Israeli tour.In 1997 Nelson Mandela who was in Pretoria making a speech said that South Africa won't be completely free until Palestine is free. Now Neil Young is in with good company like Steve Wonder,Elvis Costello,Santana and others who cancelled their tour of Israel. Keep up the good work.rim
