As we've reported over the years, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have been working on a CSNY 1974 Tour Box Set and it now seems to be just about ready just in time for the 40th anniversary of the tour.

David Crosby recently Tweeted that box was nearly finished.

Here's an interview from last fall with more detail from Graham Nash Harmonic Converger: Graham Nash Unveils a Life Full of Wild Tales | SoundBard:
NASH: The upcoming CSNY 1974 deluxe package accounts for at least eight sides of vinyl in it.

METTLER: Oooh, can we talk about that?
NASH: Sure, let’s talk about it.

METTLER: When will that be coming out?
NASH: I’m 11 mixes away from the end of a 40-song set. I’m deeply into this. Right now, I’m figuring out the cover with my friend Joel Bernstein. We listened to every single thing. We chose the best delivery of the song. The idea was this: Did Neil kill me with his delivery? Did Stephen blow my mind with “Word Game”? Which track, which one, is the best? I wanted those kind of takes. So Joel and I put this thing together. It’ll be 40 songs, and it’s the 40-year anniversary next year. I’m thoroughly expecting it to be out by March 4 [2014].

METTLER: So you’re reclaiming the sound from that tour, quite literally.
NASH: Not only that, but CSNY was an incredibly fine rock & roll band. We could really do it. I mean, not only did we have four interesting individuals and four strong songwriters, but we had the songs. I mean, Neil Young, in 1974, had an incredible burst of songwriting. He has a lot of songs on here, all written around that time, that are brilliant.

METTLER: That would be, what, songs like “Human Highway”?
NASH: [nods] “Human Highway.” “Don’t Be Denied.” “Pushed It Over the End.” “Ambulance Blues.” Just on and on and on. And one of the things about this box set, which was supposed to come out last year, is that I just kept finding things. I found this minute-and-a-half Neil song called “Goodbye Dick,” about Richard Nixon. It’s killer! I had lunch with Neil here in the city about a week ago and I told him about it, and he goes, “Ahh, I remember that one. I only did that once, right?” I said, “Yeah, you only did it once, and it’s fucking brilliant! And I’d like to use it.” And he goes, “Well, go ahead, man. Sounds good.”

METTLER: Did you also talk about putting this out in some form of HRA, high resolution audio?
NASH: Yes. The very first release on Pono, Neil Young’s new high-res playback machine, will be that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live 1974 album. All in 24/192, the highest resolution we can get. Neil has been a high-res fanatic for years, you know.
March 4 is two months out from now. Will it be ready? Or by Summer?

PONO is set to launch in March at SXSW. Maybe some news there?

Then there's the rumored 1970 CSNY BluRay DVD...

  1. In a more recent interview in UnCut
Crosby says Neil JUST RECENTLY oked
the project. But there is no official release date set according to Crosby He HOPES it will come
out this years. Reading between the
lines its Neil and only Neil who
will make the call if and when it will come out. Personally until
an official release date is given
by Neil or Reprise I wouldnt hold
    my breath

  2. I didn't realize you selectively choose which Neil Young stories you carry Thrasher. Neil putting together a "Birthday" greeting video for Howard Stern is certainly a Neil Young item of interest as far as I can tell, yet you choose to ignore it? Why?

If you're going to cover Neil, cover everything Neil does, not just what you deem politically correct. Oh but you don't have to, do ya? That's cool. It's your Neil Young News, not THE Neil Young News.

    Carry On,

  3. Personally I suspect that both the box set and Pono will be indefinitely delayed until Neil loses interest in them.

Aren't both Nash and Bernstein both on record as being very critical of the performances on the 1974 tour?

  4. @ 08:17:00 - right, holding your breath regarding NY releases is an effort in futility, as we all know.

Now baited breath is another matter... ;)

    @Negative Man - good morning!

Thanks again for all of your critical support in our endeavors.

Funny, but we don't know where the Howard/Neil video is? If we did we would certainly share it. Not sure what you're implying? Can you clarify your lightly veiled insinuations?

Also, it seems like you're really on top of NY news. Interested in becoming an editor? You can always reach us @ thrasher@thrasherswheat.org

    We await hearing from you.

If you're not interested in helping our non-profit/non-commercial endeavors to help out Neil fans for free, then maybe refrain from the negativity, ok?

    peace

  6. Just thought it was strange that you ignored it. Not a Stern fan? Neil must appreciate his honesty or I don't think he'd cut him a personal video. It was pretty cool! Glad I could share something with you that you were apparently unaware of? You're usually on top of these things! My bad for implying that you chose to ignore it. With all the REAL news flying around, it just seemed that way.

Anonymous and his festering hemorrhoid comment, now that's a real contribution to the board right there. Wish I could be more like him.

Pono is dead. Can I say that or do you deem that to be too negative?

If you only want comments that are all of the hippie dream variety, I could give you some of those too!!

Have a bright, sunshiny day everybody!!

Good job Thrasher as always! Keep on chooglin'! Don't listen to any negativity, even if it comes from me ever ;)

  8. Human Highway should be an odd choice, becase it was played only 4 times in 1974. I had always thought that it wasn't recorded in multitracks.

    So Tired.

  9. CROZ-TWEET: any news on old csny live material being realeased?”.......done mixing this Fri......out soon ..

  10. NASH: Yes. The very first release on Pono, Neil Young’s new high-res playback machine, will be that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live 1974 album.

  11. These nash quotes are from last year
    and meaningless. Until Neil or
    Reprise makes an official statement
on a pending release and date all of this speculation is just pissing in the wind.

  12. Tecnically CSNY aren't on Reprise. In 1974 they were signed with Atlantic. More likely a Blue Castle - Rhino release.

    So Tired.

  13. @Negative Man - link?

@So Tired - Human Highway really captures the '74 tour's essence.

  15. All this talk of a forty year old live tour that I'm glad I missed. What about NY's next record any word on an official release date.

  16. Thanks Neg Man. Got the news but need the link to the video??

Also, we're way off topic here.

Email the link and don't post in thread.

  17. Wow! So much negativity for a guy that really does a lot of good for the Neil community. The people that matter, and aren't afraid to share their name, still love you and appreciate your hard work.

As to the CSNY release. It will either happen or it won't. I hope it does.

Pono is not dead. It may not catch on as the nest big thing, but it's not dead yet.

  18. Great to hear 'Goodbye Dick' will be included!

I'm hoping for that 'Pardon My Heart/The Old Homestead'

    I'm homo for pono.

  19. Thanks Jon! I honestly appreciate that! This place gets too uptight sometimes. Thrasher wants it to be all cult like. I love Neil Young!! There, I said it. Me and Thrash, we just have a failure to communicate.

I would love to see Pono succeed. But my gut feeling is someone is going to take a bath on this thing. Neil's probably still hunting for that certain financial backer.

I saw CSN&Y at Royals Stadium in 1974. I snuck down to the stage area and took some shots on my Instamatic. I still have them. They look young and fucked up out of their minds. I was awestruck. Would love to see that come out!

    Peace out Thras her

  20. Goodbye Dick is fuckin' brilliant? I have now heard it all, Mr. Nash.

It won't happen until Elliott says it will happen. Maybe he has....At any rate, it is the release I am looking forward to hearing.

  22. I own a lot of bootlegs from the 1974 tour. Stills' voice is shot and you can almost hear the cocaine. Young seems uninterested a lot of the times and Nash is kind of screaming his harmonies.

It's not all bad, but it's nowhere near the 1969 & 1970 tours. If Nash selected only the best performances it could be one heck of a record. I guess that's better than a realistic representation?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why not release a box-set of the 1969 & 1970 tours as well? I know we got 4 way street but that's only a double album.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Any 1974 CSNY box set that's worth its money should include at least one disk of clunkers they played on that horribly overblown tour. I mean, hell, they didn't scrap a live album afterwards for nothing, did they? I mean, the foursome barely talked to each other, Stills was stoned out of his mind most of the time, Neil travelled separately in his own bus... What's Nash raving about? The only lasting value of that Doom Tour (as they used to call it before the box set idea came akong) were Neils new songs, many of which were, indeed, incredible. But "Goodbye Dick" fucking brilliant? Nash always was the cheerleader of the band, but this is embarassing.

  25. Any release will be on reprise CSN does not have a record contract. Last three releases american Dream Looking forward Deja Vu Live all were on reprise. That is why neil
hols the cards. CSN were offered a one album deal by CBS but only to do
a cover album. CBS gave them Rubin to produce it and it didnt work

  26. After a lot of speculation the box set is just around the corner, have heard a coupe of songs it's sounds great and a huge booklet 188 pages,
    great stuff
