This tour is bubbling up towards being another classic isn't it? Anyone read the Newcastle review over at guardian.co.uk? They gave it 5 stars.
ReplyDeleteI have a standing ticket for Liverpool in August, and seeing the photo of the line, was wondering what time I need to get in line to have the pick of where I stand. Obviously it will vary from venue to venue, but has anyone got any idea?
I am just back to my hotel after this, my first Neil Young gig. I'm only 28, but I feel like I'd been waiting every one of those years for this. Neil and the Horse surpassed all expectations: loud and beautiful and warm. Hey Hey My My was particularly epic.

ReplyDeleteAlthough very similar, I preferred the setlist in Newcastle but the intensity in Glasgow was up a notch. The band seemed to be more into it and more on their game. They got a lot more back from the audience last night and seemed to feed off that.
The 2 friends I was with are part-time fans who were attending their first Crazy Horse gig. They were blown away, especially by Walk Like A Giant which they both picked as the highlight.
Terrific set again by Los Lobos also.
The SECC isn't renowned for good sound but from where I was standing it was excellent. No complaints at all.
As close to perfect as an evening can get.
That's the end of my Crazy Horse week. I really wish I was heading over to Dublin but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

ReplyDeleteIt is, indeed, better to burn out than to fade away. Neil Young's first show in Glasgow with Crazy Horse since 2001 was an exhilarating event, old and much-loved songs from his formidable back catalogue being thrown into the mix alongside newer songs. Predictable it wasn't.
The fourth song in, Walk Like A Giant, from his latest album, Psychedelic Pill, was a pulverising, 20-minute long affair. The last 10 minutes were a sheer cacophony of noise, Young fluttering his fingers against the strings of his Gibson guitar; it sounded like a submarine coming apart at the seams under the waves. It was a trifle self-indulgent, but a gripping sight, nonetheless.
The contrast with the songs that followed could not have been greater - a gentle, mid-tempo new offering, Hole in the Sky (the Woodstock festival logo on the screen behind the band); then Young's solo acoustic-guitar-and-harmonica of Heart of Gold, the audience singing along, their camera phones like fireflies in the darkness.
Young then did an expressive reading of Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind, which in turn was followed by another poignant new song, Singer Without A Song (to underline the point, a lone woman clutching a guitar case wandered distractedly around the stage).
Young, more often than not clustered in front of Ralph Molina's drum kit with guitarist Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro and bassist Billy Talbot - four defiantly against the world - also delivered barnstorming versions of Powderfinger, Ramada Inn, Cinnamon Girl, Mr Soul and a particularly thunderous Hey, Hey, My, My.
Young is 67 but shows little inclination to age gracefully.
Great concert, amazing how he keeps going.

A pity about the self indulgent noise he produced at the end of some tracks. Used up valuable time and energy. Wish he could have given us some more great tracks instead.
The end was a bit disappointing. We could have hasd a couple of great tracks from the catalogue, such as Rockin in the Free world. It was a limp ending.
I've seen NY several times across the years! This time v disappointed, a 'piece of crap' to use a phrase. Self-indulgent stuff, missed out loads of stuff, too many extended feedback endings. I am a huge fan BTW so don't get me wrong. I also have tickets for London Monday, hope things improve. Remember 'this note's for you'? Why oh why is NY advertising Fender. And lyrics to Hole in the Sky are well below his standard.

I would hope that you are well aware that he has been using these stage props on and off for more than 30 years and hasn't suddenly signed a sponsorship deal with Fender. Have you seen Rust Never Sleeps and Weld??
Again, if you're a "huge fan" are you not familiar with what a Crazy Horse show is like and specifically what this tour, which started in August last year, is like?
Or are you not actually that huge a fan really?
'Could have used a couple of great tracks from the catalogue'? Er, Roll Another Number and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere aren't great tracks from the catalogue? Roll... is a encore favourite and it was a real surprise and delight to hear Everybody. While it would have been great to hear Cortez or Hurricane, I was more than satisfied with the powerful and emotional songs and extended jams of the main set. I thought these two brought things to a lovely conclusion.
ReplyDeleteAs for people complaining about the 'self-indulgent' noise and feedback bits...each to their own, but has it occurred to you that some folk might really enjoy these bits? As a fan of noise, drone, free jazz and what not, I loved these bits - took me to another place. You just have to open your mind and go with the flow, to be really cheesy about it. Really powerful, brilliantly layered and sculptured feedback and skronk. I hate to think what people complaining about this would make of a Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine gig...

I grew up in Canada so Neil is more of a institution to me than a great musician. Been in the UK for 18 years and Neil is not understood by most music fans as he should be or at least the way I do. I feel that since his performance with Paul McCartney A Day In The Life a few years ago most music fans know of Neil but with regret have not put in the time to somewhat understand the man.

I remember countless times seeing Neil in many different band set ups. Some I prefer better than others. Had a chance to enjoy a wee special cig with him back stage in Toronto, I think 1987 or so.
We just need to accept that it takes time to become a proper Neil Fan so some of these comments will just need to be ignored.
I was at the show in Newcastle and Neil and the Horse were outstanding, the crowd was crap! So not the best Neil gig I have been to but my 12 year old boy had the chance to see him which made up for the lack of effort from the crowd.
Oh, years ago in Glasgow I was having a pint in Ashton Lane in the West End and this busker was singing Last trip to Tulsa! I almost shat myself! I sat with him for the full 10 minutes singing it with him!
Haha, Abraham Lincoln indeed, never heard that one before;) Listen up, I'm almost as old as Neil and following since the start, so maybe not as much NY is God as you all seem to be but still a fan. Clearly only comments saying it was 'best ever' are acceptable so will sign off till Monday's London concert with other fans I am attending with. Peace & love etc ...

ReplyDeleteWell, you might as well unload those tickets now, because, if you have any idea of what has been going on throughout the whole year this tour has been going on you'll see that the set lists are broadly similar. Refer to the chronological set lists at sugar mountian, linked above. You are certain to be even more upset. "Fool me once..."etc.
There seems to be a predictable fractional minority of people who are going to have a problem at these shows- "Too loud " "Too indulgent" "Didn't play what I wanted to hear" "Played X when he should have played Z" "WLAG was 3 minutes too long" (actual quote) "Too much feedback" etc etc ad nauseum. I've read more than one complaint here about "F#$kin Up", that it was taken as some sort of insult to the audience. Notice that no one ever complains about his voice, his guitar playing (except for the feedback), or the dynamics of the bad.

Well said - I was at Glasgow. The set was awesome ... with WLAG and F*!#in Up real highlights - No one plays as well as Neil Young & Crazy Horse. If you want a safe 2 hours go to see an X-Factor spin off ... but for 2 hours of emotion, humour & raw power then Neil & co can't be beaten. As Neil said at the end chances are they won't be back but I for one am glad to have seen them at their best.
DeleteThe concert was amazing. Astounding. Spectacular. Yes the set list was very similar to what has come before but Neil Young has always done that. I feel that particular set list, with occasional changes from night to night, was carefully considered and crafted in much the same way as in the le noise tour a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteLast nights versions in Glasgow were top notch. Neil and the Horse were on their game and enjoying themselves.
Particular highlights for me were Ramada Inn (amazing guitar last night) and Hole in the Sky (surprising for me because I didn't think too much of it before, but his voice was sublime).
I struggle to understand those who feel they are somehow missing out on something because the songs are long / have long endings. What makes them think more songs would be played? The concert would probably just be shorter. I personally find all the feedback and noise beautiful. It's a joy to listen to and experience (much more so when you're there in person as opposed to on YouTube). In the particular case of Walk Like a Giant, surely the long ending should be viewed as part of the song, rather than Neil and the Horse stringing out the ending (it is like that on the album after all).
In the words of my brother, who had not heard any of the new material, 'These new songs really stand up there with the classics. I'm glad he played them for so long because by the time they'd finished I knew them as well as the old ones'.
I just wish there were tickets left for the Liverpool gig in August. I see on the ticket master website that the current dates are advertised as 'Alchemy Tour', whereas the August dates are not... Maybe there's a change in the air.
Hope neil can find it in his heart to add a Scottish date in August.
Brilliant and blistering show in Glasgow. Full-blown or gentle, Neil Young and Crazy Horse proved they are in a class of their own.

ReplyDeleteI can tell him why -Aberdeen audiences are much better. Last night people walked out, there was no real enthusiasm at end of each song, except for the well known ones, and a feeble encore.
This was a poor response from a Scottish audience to a brilliant show from Neil. Ok occasionally he was over indulgent but folks this is Neil Young
In his Aberdeen show he had several encores and the audience was buzzing throughout.
Will he come back to Glasgow? I doubt it!

soI was at the concert in Glasgow and saw Neil and Crazy Horse for the first and probable the only time in my life . I knew what to expect and was very happy with the program .He like all of us is getting older , distortion , feedback , etc . its all railing against old age . Stay young as possible people . By the way ,just before the gig I was out walking in Perthshire and came across an old steamroller in a farmyard , motif on steamroller , Buffalo Springfield .

I've been buying all of Neil's music since 1976 and I'm very aware of the many forks in the road and the importance of going along with what he is doing at any particular time.
ReplyDeleteBut, this concert was ultimately ruined by the endings to the songs, especially Giant. Not because of the feedback, it being too loud or too self-indulgent but because they were boring and I can't accept die hard fans endorsing boredom. The more NY is assured that these methods are wonderful then the more they will endure and that is a pity for those paying substantial amounts to watch his shows.
Amazing night, worth the 6hrs travel time to stand in awe of a giant. We've saw NY a few times but never with Crazy Horse. My wife & daughter was there with me & they too were blown away. Walk Like A Giant was immense, I loved it, my wife stood in awe, my daughter had tears in her eyes she loved every minute, it was our highlight of the night - all 20 minutes of it! To see the joy in the bands faces, they looked as happy to be there on stage as we were to stand watching. The set list was good, Mr Soul & Cinnamon Girl were great, I loved Neil's Blowing In The Wind also. It angered me to hear a few voices of dissent, so we moved position, jeez if you're a fan then you should know what to expect, otherwise leave the tickets to those that truly want to be there! Amazing night, the memories will stay with me a long, long time.

I've seen Neil Young three times now, in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and now Glasgow. All three concerts have been absolutely brilliant. First time seeing Crazy Horse - man they were great and looked like they really enjoyed it. Probably the best ever version of F*ckin Up! Yes the setlist could have been more 'casual fan friendly', but nothing to get upset about. Los Lobos were great too. Come back to Scotland soon Neil!

As to the whiners well this site is mainly for fans so the comments are mostly going to be pro Neil (he can't do anything wrong you know!). Well I also found the work outs to be too similar and boring. Yes Yes I know this is Neil it's just like the Weld record which I have Arc Weld which was just feedback - we have all been here before. It's probably the last NYCH concerts in the UK.

I thought much of Thursday nights show is amazing it is just not satisfying to listen to long passages of feedback whether its NY or Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.
