Just came across some nice historic photos on Shooting Stars: My Spectrum Memories in Photos and Words by Roger Barone. Definitely check out the site with behind the scenes photos and stories by Barone, a former changeover crew employee at the Philadelphia Spectrum Arena.
Above, Stephen Stills plays a Gibson Firebird while jamming with Neil Young, playing his "Ol Black" Les Paul, at the Spectrum during their all too brief concert tour in 1976. Stills & Young are pictured playing an electric version of "Black Queen." with Jerry Aiello, keyboards, Joe Lala, percussion, George "Chocolate" Perry, bass, and Joe Vitale, drums, from Stills' backup band.

ReplyDeleteAnd it's not a tired and beyond worn out re-hash of Ronnie Van Zant vs. Neil(feud is/was a myth we get it!) or Powderfinger lyric analysis or global warming propaganda, etc.
Speaking of that, I'll be waiting breathlessly for your blog post which will dissect the inconvenient hypocrisy of the fraud huckster Al Gore selling his lame network to Al Jezeera and thus taking...OIL MONEY!!
There's a lyric from Neil which aptly applies to this situation :
"He took his money just like all the rest..."

DeleteGreat pics! Love the Stills-Young Band. I also hope they will release a decent recording of one of those shows. Matt, I am listening a lot to "Eat a Peach" and always love the fire crackers during my favourite "Midnight On The Bay". But hey, I'm a huge fan of neil interaction with the audience.

ReplyDelete@ Matthew L-- I myself do not have any recordings of this brief tour, but almost every weekend, Roel from RUST RADIO plays a great show where NY is attemping "On The Way Home" and the crowd is just being WAY too rowdy so he gets pissed-off and basically tells the lot of them to F#!K OFF !!! Talk about audience interaction HA HA !!! Check out RUST RADIO every weekend and you will hear it at some point "I Guarantee It" !!!

ReplyDeleteI was at the Miami Baseball Stadium gig. Neil had bailed by that time, though. Poco opened and were pretty good. Timothy B. Schmidt was still with them. Then this little Southern outfit, Lynyrd Skynyrd, hit the stage. Absolutely scorching. "What song is it you wanna hear?" Indeed.
ReplyDeleteStills was pounding Jack Daniels his entire set. He was plowed by halfway through. But who could blame him? Unbelievable pressure. Chris Hillman filled in for Neil but Stephen knew he had to carry the whole show.
But I can't help but wonder what could have been that day. Neil and Ronnie, Stephen and Gary and Allen and the new kid, Steve Gaines. What a jam that could have been.
@Matthew L. There are quite a few recordings out there including a decent tour compilation that features an acoustic "Like a Hurricane." And Stills' version of "The Loner" f*ckin' rocks.

What wonderfull memories I have of this show. I was only 15 but they rocked and I must admit I didn't appreciate how rare the pairing was. Tour ended abruptly shortly after this show and it turned out to be the only one they ever did with this lineup! "Long May You Run" sounded kind of corny in '76, but the older it gets the better it sounds. Neil is God.
