Last week, we posted an image for the album cover of "Psychedelic Pill" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

Since then, we have come to learn that there is a second version of the art by Gary Burden, as pictured above.

As you can see, there's quite a bit of difference between the two pill dosages.

According to the PR, "The original album artwork recently revealed has been revised (pictured above) and taken on a stronger, more direct image to reflect the commanding and expansive music heard on the two CD or three vinyl disc sets."

So which dosage do you prefer? The small dose? Or the big dose?

The album is to be released on October 30th and is now up on Amazon.com. Apparently, only the small dosage is available for pre-orders.

  1. I like the top one. They're both really weird, though.

  2. Both terrible! Can't wait to hear the music though.

  3. Could we get both?
    No choice!
    We need both!

  4. I want the BIG pill. Of course.

  5. I prefer the first starry one. The emphasis should be the psychadelia as opposed to the pill. To Mom and Dad the cover just doesn't matter. Burn-outs'll be stubbin' their toes on those gargantuan crazy Horse-Pills that make 'em Walk Like a Giant.

  6. Doesn't matter, you can't OD on Neil Young music!

  7. Ugh, not a fan of the large one with the white background. I prefer the lame starry one, i think it looks really cool!

  8. Psychedelic Soap

When I first heard about the title I was only hoping they would NOT put a pill on the cover.

When I first saw version one on my cell phone I could not believe Gary Burden made it.

The space image looks like it comes from a nineties stock photo cd. The typeface doesn't ad much soul to the image and the pill looks like Photoshop from the nineties.

I can imagine that consuming a psychedelic pill is a metaphor for a feeling that comes up while writing a book about your life. Don't hear that in the song with the same title. So, yes, I was a bit surprised that the man who wrote and fortunately continues singing The Needle And The Damage Done comes up with an album cover that in a way romanticizes drug use. I'm a big rock star. My sales have tanked... The younger kids all prefer pills above other drugs.

The larger pill looks like soap. That's better. But that image has been made for Amazon only. They can't sell a NY and CH album if their name is not visible on the cover.

Well, I hope Neil Young will remember that many singers lost their band.

  15. I kinda like the first (top) one. Does that make me weird?

    The bottom one is atrocious.

  16. I like the covers, but I think they should take it back to the drawing board. It just looks a little too pasted together. And maybe get rid of the pill. It's a good idea conceptually, but I don't think it translates well visually.

In any case, as a man of inverted tastes, I hereby proclaim this Neil's best cover art since Fork in the Road.

  17. Thanks for reminding us of that one Matt - it was abysmal too! For me the worst covers are Silver and Gold, Chrome Dreams II, and Are You Passionate?

My favourite ones are Living With War in the beginning, Weld, Eldorado, Landing in Water, A Treasure, American Stars and Bars, time fades away, and Neil Young. And EKTIN.

  18. The little one is far better. Prettier colors, spacy design, and as everyone familiar with psychedelia knows, it's all about the small, hidden details. With a giant pull, you might as well call the album "Ketamine".

  19. Change the title to WALK LIKE GIANT.That has more meaning than anything. When i first heard that song, the first simple lyrics, Walk like a giant.....floating like a leaf...but back to wanting to walk like a giant ..... had more impact on me than anything Neil in 10 + years.Perfect.Made sense.Didnt even have to get deeper than that basic idea.Anything more was extra. And doing it with CH made it to another level. After that I said if Neil never records again,he hit the high mark again.I'm satisfied.
2 weeks later after a heavy hike in Hawaii( walking like a giant), I was diagnosed with a bunch of cancer.Boy did those lyrics fit then. From walking like a Giant to Floating like a leaf....but of course I will continue to try and get back to walking like a giant !!! I had major surgery 6 days ago.Been home 3 days.I dont even know how I am typing this.
I listened to walk like a giant every day in the hospital.I have a long way to go but I will walk like a giant if its the last thing I do.Thanks Neil for the great song ! Inspiration beyong all my 42 years of listening to your music.Never stop trying to walk like a gaint.Never baby !You get it, as you always have. This is the essence of life, even without my complication.
    I feel great considering.Mentaly strong.
Ready to fight.Long way to go.I even asked the doctor how could i have been so sick and hike like that and then be this weak and sick ?
It was all in my spirit for life i guess.
Walk like a giant as the title with a pic of Neil and the guys hiking in volcano region of Mauii ! That would do it for me.I intend to shortly pre-order the vinyl, cd and blu-ray.It may take me months or years to walk like a giant again, but there is no doubt I will.
Cant wait for the oficial release.
Thanks Neil and CH for a great one !

  20. The 'Horse' pill on the new one is a bit hard to swallow.

The psychedelia is eveident on the first edition, a little space trucking adventure.

It still amazes me though how much a simple expresiion of art can bring such condemnation and criticism. Does it even matter? We got new Neil Young and Crazy Horse recordings. If it was only released on downloads we wouldn't even have a debate. Such is the 21st century I guess.

  22. I think they should change out the big pill for a picture of me on the first one, and then use that.
