R.E.M. & Neil Young on "Country Feedback" from Bridge School Benefit in 1998.
This performance is -- without a doubt -- one of R.E.M's finest of one their most loved songs.
Which -- naturally -- would also make this one of our favorite tracks on the Bridge School Concert 25th Anniversary package set
. Also, one of our all time favorite Bridge moments occurs at about ~1:10. Watch it and feel the sheer awe of Michael Stipe as he takes in the moment. Stipe sits down on the stage, in an awe-like reverence while literally gnawing his fingers. Then when Stipe sings, his voice cracks with emotion.
Neil Young's acoustic rhythm on the song is just so simply stunning in his most achingly acoustic, hauntingly-beautiful-spook-in-the-muse transcendence.
Magic. Breathless.
The DVD playing through the ol' hi-fi stereo at "11" is well... in the parlance of our times... just freakin' awesome.

ReplyDeleteI got to see this (25th Anniversary DVD set) on 10/24/11 at my theater, and to see this full size on screen was breathtaking...literally. I REALLY felt like I was there on stage with them.
It so touched my heart that the next day I went to Amazon (via your link of course) and purchased it. It made a wonderful birthday present for me!
I find that I play this song (Country Feedback) more than any others (and often!)
To know they were giving this pure music to the children just blesses my heart!

ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible performance of a unique and powerful song. Listening and watching made me think of the song Blue, with a sound and feel much the same as Country Feedback, and the same sense of deep mystery. It's the last song on REM's last album, with Michael Stipe and Patti Smith equally sublime.
I love the smile from Peter Buck. Then the way Neil gives Pete a nice quick hug right at the end. And I love Neil's beard from back then...kind of looks like Walter Huston in Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

@Mr H - yes, that smile from Peter Buck says so much. says it all. Peter B gets it. And so do we.
I honestly did not know this footage existed. If I had to rate my favorite musicians ( and I'm kind of glad I don't) Neil would occupy the number one spot and REM would be a strong number two. Sadly, I never got a chance to see them live and now never will. Thanks for the video, I'll be watching it often. And Merry Christmas all TWers, and especially you Thrash and Thrashette.

ReplyDeleteVery eloquently written, one problem however...it is very evident that Peter Buck was playing acoustic rhythm, and Neil was playing acoustic LEAD...

ReplyDeleteMr. Henry, I've seen Neil many, many times, going back to "Tonight's the Night" tour. I was refering to REM who I've never seen live. I hope you're right about REM,and I'm sure we'll see more of Neil soon.
