Thanks for keepin' the word alive, Thrasher. Surely everyone must feel the rumblin' now. They just arrested a couple hundred protesters after penning them in on the Brooklyn Bridge. It's pretty obvious who protects the billionaires who destroyed our country at this point. Our very own police forces. Serve and Protect the Greedy Bankers.

ReplyDeleteThis us an amazing song! I wish it would be done in the acoustic version (without the studio manipulations) so the lyrics would be clear and issued on a new CD. It gives me chills when I hear it. It should be our new national anthem-and blasted from speakers in every city in the U.S.

ReplyDeleteThe song's meaning is all about A RUMBLIN IN THE GROUND that is created through a serious manipulation of the electic guitar creating a wild reverb so the listener (you & I) feel like we're caught up in an echo chamber with him. (Mother Nature's echo chamber LOL)
If you heard him play this live, you'd see there is absolutely no manipulation of the sound going down other than what Neil wants you to hear (and feel.) He's in absolute control here.
But, you're absolutely right! It's magical this song. It's transforming because he's magical. He speaks a great medicine!
I also think he sings the lyrics on Rumblin a little differently dependings on what he's feeling that day.
Has anyone else noticed?
@Matthew - we've just trying to point out the obvious for the last 15 years, that's all. NY's been doing it for 40 yrs. Maybe folks are waking up & getting a clue...
ReplyDelete@Viper - Maybe an acoustic @ BSB this year? NY & CH did a pretty awesome acoustic CYM @ BSB in '94 that was some major rumblin'.

Yes I saw him do this live this year and the seats in the theater were vibrating; it was powerful and I loved it. I am so glad I got to see him on this tour when he was alone. He can make one guitar sound like five. As much as I love this song as is and understand the physical feeling of rumbling and the noises coming out if that guitar, I would still like to hear a quieter version ( like he's done with other numbers) so you can get the full effect of the lyrics. But I have to say, the man can do no wrong!!!! I love whatever he does.

ReplyDeleteI see feel those jolts of electricity when he's playing his acoustic, too, Viper. He absolutely has this very pecular style of playing the "electric" parts on his acoustic.
He also keeps a perfect tempo all the way through his songs -- just watch his leg swishing. It's really amazing how he can get the full "orchestral" sound when he's playing with just one instrument.
I've been watching him go through his repertoire re-tooling some of the oldies. The one I've been waiting for is an acoustic version of "Alabama."
The play on words and images in tht song is just brilliant:
"See the old folks, tied in white ropes, hear the banjo? Don't it bring you down home?"
Heaven and hell are indistinguishable here. One in the same.

I don't think that this is a political song but you go and run with that ball if it strikes you that way.

ReplyDeleteAnd there's no metaphor here in the form of rumblin from environmental abuses heaped upon our soil, water, and air?? Or a rumblin from human injustices we ignore because no one appears to be paying attention to what our elected government officials are doing because everyong is too busy watching television news stories?
Do you really think the song is about a naturally occuring release of gasses and heat from friction underneath the ground?
And Greendale for you is what? One long song laced with long guitar riffs off and on?
(Okay, I get it now. Neils doing this for the money and chicks, right? Danny Lenoise scored him some time with the babes and booze and the rumblin Neil's singing about is the shit he's gonna get from his old lady when she finds out!)
I meant it's an environmental song not a political song that a bunch of protesters should hang their flag on.

If it's not a political manipulation of legislation or political censorship of scientific research from the last 35 years protecting big oil & petroleum then why is it that people today are not driving cheap energy efficient vehicles and living in homes and working in buildings powered by efficient and sustainable alternative energies?
