As we reported earlier, Jonathan Demme's third Neil Young concert film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Demme's final installment in his concert film trilogy was shot last May over two nights at Massey Hall in Toronto.

This past May, Neil Young brought his solo tour to Toronto’s Massey Hall, an iconic venue in the city of his birth. Jonathan Demme was on hand to capture the two nights, which highlighted new songs from the album Le Noise, produced by Daniel Lanois, mixed with classics like “Ohio” and “I Believe in You.” At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity that balances his wisdom and experience. It’s no wonder he’s been an inspiration to the likes of Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. In Neil Young Life, Demme intersperses the Massey Hall concert footage with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbours and their daughters. As he drives past bulldozers transforming the landscape, he remarks, “It’s all gone… it’s still in my head.”

We got our tickets early this morning online. It was "touch and go" for a while but we persevered and got through finally. The tickets are general admission, so there will be huge line-ups before the screening. I'm just happy that we were able to score some tickets. I also tried on the phone right at 7 a.m. without any success. We got through online at about 7:15 a.m. this morning. I'm really looking forward to the screening. It will be very cool to see Jonathan Demme in conversation with Neil on-stage after the screening.

Wow, I love the way Ohio sounds. It's magnificent. And I loooooooooove how Neil holds the last note of "How can you run when you knooooooooooooowwww...." That's marvelous. Of course, still lookin' forward to seeing Trunk Show, which ought to get a proper home viewing release now that they're showing this new one.

Ohio was certainly the highlight of the Buffalo show last year. It'll be nice to see this film without the noise and interuption of the 'fans' in the audience talking over the top of the music. Plus it puts ya in the front row for thw whole thing. I was able to see Trunkshow last year the same week as Neil came through town, so it's a treat to have the films too.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope they got a really good take of Peaceful Valley Blvd. It's my favorite Neil song of the 21st century. I understand at one of the two shows they filmed, someone called out during a really amazing take and Neil dropped the beat...
ReplyDeleteOf course, there's a certain charm to how he messes up Thrasher in the RNS concert video too, so I won't be too disappointed, and certainly won't be surprised if that's the take they decide to go with, particularly if the other is perfect, as we all know Neil can't deal with publishing perfect takes of things (such as how Get Around was a hit single if there ever was one and so got (maliciously!) cut from FITR...)

Well, we can't say we see the charm. ;) After seeing the flub more times than we can count, we always wished that more than a single show on tour had been filmed. regardless, it's an incredibly complex lyrical song to deliver.
It's kind of a wonder that Neil was able to pull off. On the Boarding House tapes, Thrasher is delivered flawlessly. When we saw the '78 tour, it was incredibly rowdy and it was astonishing that Neil was even able to perform it at all given the amount of pandemonium during the acoustic songs.
