A Rapper Covers "Old Man": The Story Behind The Music

Here's Canadian rapper Redlight King sampling Neil Young's "Old Man".

We had to admit we were a bit intrigued because we've heard a hundred covers already. But we highly recommend checking this out in yet another genre-bending interpretation of the Neil classic.

There's also an interesting backstory here as well. Apparently, Neil's management refused to grant the rights to the song until Neil stepped in personally.

And here's that tale on the making of Redlight King's cover/re-mix of Neil Young's "Old Man". (via CraveOnline.com)

That's authentic and action, with a great cover by Neil for their interpretation. Many listenings forthcoming.

  3. Best thing I've heard in a while---
great lyrics and message--I hope this guy gets a career leg up on this---
Really cool to hear Ben Keith's steel and Neil's voice over a rap beat---but it's really the original harvest beat souped up a little isn't it?---glad Neil let it happen.

  7. For those of you who were at least mildly entertained by that, check this out. I'm a huge Neil fan and just stumbled across this:

It's a project that actually came out almost two years ago but I just found it. Hip-hop re-mixes of Neil tunes, but in a very interesting and thorough way. This guy mashes up Neil's songs with interview clips, bootlegs, live versions, cover versions in a very compelling way. Very chill, low-key takes on classic Neil songs. He also has a Beatles album and is apparently working on a Pink Floyd album in the same vein.

  10. Check out Doomtree's "Knives On Fire" for a nice sampling of Nash's Chicago (in my opinion, used and performed to better effect all around).
