Neil Young's "Philadelphia" received an Academy Award nomination in 1994 and heperformed the song during the ceremony.
Both Bruce Springsteen and Young were nominated for Best Song in a film for Jonathan Demme's "Philadelphia". Bruce's nominated song was the film opening "Streets of Philadelphia" and Neil's was the closing title track "Philadelphia".
Bruce Springsteen won the Oscar award for his song "Streets of Philadelphia". In his acceptance speech, Springsteen acknowledged Young and said that the award really deserved to be shared by the other nominee's song.

Union, of course.” Wally Pfister, who won a cinematography Oscar for “Inception,” thanked his “fantastic union crew” during his acceptance speech. When asked backstage about the shout-out, Pfister gave a rousing defense of unions:PFISTER: I think that what is going on in Wisconsin is kind of madness right now. I have been a union member for 30 years and what the union has given to me is security for my family. They have given me health care in a country that otherwise does not provide health care and I think the unions are a very important part of the middle class of America, so I stand strong behind any of the union members in this country and in any other country. All we are trying to do is get a decent wage and have medical care.

Also, later in the broadcast, Charles Ferguson — who won the Best Documentary Oscar for his film “Inside Job” — called for the prosecution of those responsible for the 2008 economic crash. “Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by financial fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that’s wrong,” Ferguson said.

ReplyDeleteOf course union rank & file members are a vital part of the middle class but for crying out loud - why can't they contribute to their own retirement and health care like the MAJORITY of working Americans do? Most citizens here in the USA are not union members and should resent the fact that union leadership refuses to face up to the fact that the free ride is over. Most states and the federal government are broke - hello? Future calling - where's the money? Oh wait - it's been spent by political hacks from both parties.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a union man and have never been in a union. The situation that government (federal, state and local) find themselves in today is only exacerbated by pension and pay. The real culprit is the people that the Director of "Inside Job" spoke to in his acceptance speech - financial fraud. Government Pensions and salary were no problem when revenue was normal, or at least what was thought to be normal. However, the fraud caused a domino effect. Stock markets dropped values which hurt every pension fund and 401k accounts. Government tax revenue were cut by 30% due to unemployment and poor sales. My understanding is that unions in WI have agreed to cuts but the Governor has union busting as his goal. He is playing politics. I believe unions have rights. He does not. There is a hard wind about to blow.
@Mike _ you're right. The unions are being scapegoated. The WI Gov is being used by Wall St to cover their fraud.

Jonathan, Contributing to a profit margin doesn't give us a say about how our money should be invested. When we buy a Reprise record, do we have a say in how they invest their money? How they manage their employees? What their employees can invest in?
ReplyDeleteWhat gives anyone the right to interfere with unions? Do we really want our government having that much control over people? To minimize collective bargaining for a group that is demanding it?

ReplyDeleteAs far as the political statement that he is attempting to make - when someone's foundational premise for any argument is fundamentally wrong, then any and all arguments that flow from that initial false premise are therefore also incorrect.
Trying to argue and/or reason with today's American liberal is the equivalent of trying to capture a squirrel in a backyard with a tennis racket - all that is accomplished is frustration.

Umm no. It would be an extremely LONG post here on what was initially a 'Philadelphia' Oscar thread to dismantle goofball Tom Tomorrow's silly little cartoon but perhaps I could delve in deeper at another time. Do you read my posts or scan them and reply without a thought to what was actually conveyed? His premise (and yours and the entire Democrat party) is skewed and FUNDAMENTALLY flawed. Therefore, in order to fully comment, I would have to first prove the fact that his foundation of thought is WRONG. It would be much easier to have a few beers and discuss - I do have a life to live.
