1986 Interview with Neil Young on YouTube
A 1986 interview at the Philadelphia Spectrum on the opening night of the Rusted Out Garage tour. Neil Young is profiled and interviewed by Adrienne Meltzer in this excerpt from "The Rock'N'Roll Evening News."

The Opening Night of the tour was 9/15/86 in Rochester, NY.It was a great show.9/17/86 Philadelphia was the 2nd night of the Rusted Out Garage Tour. Keep On Rockin' Steve

ReplyDeleteobviously he was goin' through his "cut off the arms" period at the time of this interview!
His recent style is to wear them only half on with only one arm in a sleeve when performing live..
What will the twisted road bring?
one thing that never changes...
maybe only in length and shape..and thats his signature mutton chops...
only Neil can get away with the "chops".. through every fashion, every mode that has evolved through the generations

Anon- correction accurate on the opener in Rochester. I enjoyed that one after not seeing Neil since Rust Never Sleeps tour. College and tours didn't necessarily converge around then.

Exemplary observations, Doc! The 'sawed off' flannels was the period circa 'Born In The U.S.A' when Neil had made mention of the fact that he had been "working out with Bruce"! Obviously, that phase was short lived. However, I must confess, as soon as I saw Neil's, I hacked off all of the sleeves on my flannels as well. As soon as I saw him wearing those Converse All-Star High Tops during the 'Solo Trans Tour',well, you guessed it!I've probably spent as much on my wardrobe trying to keep up with Neil as I have on the music. I only have one suit though so I had to stop short of splattering it with paint. And yes, same with the hair and sideburns. I can't think of a better person to emulate, though, seeing how he represents the 'regular guy' and all. I actually had a total stranger once come up to me and say "hey,man .. you look like that old hippy I saw on t.v. last night ... you know, the guy with the guitar and harmonica thing". Needless to say, I got a rise out of that one. I guess I have to thank God that he never went through the 'Glitter Phase' as I would have had to draw the line!

ReplyDeleteI remember back when "After the Gold rush" first came out.
I think I was about 17 or 18 at the time. I deliberately ripped my levis in various places then got Mum to put patches over the tears!
Used to wear a suede tassled vest with the jeans..Thought I was Mr Young himself....just couldn't play guitar for shit! lol
Could never grow mutton chops, just a bit of bum fluff..then spent the rest of the year walkin' round singing "Cripple Creek ferry"
and "tell me Why"..

Funny comments. My signature look in high school and up until my hair fell out was a tee shirt, jeans and a flannel shirt worn open and untucked. Hair parted in the middle and warn shoulder length and of course the mutton chops. I even had a band after high school. Problem with me was, I couldn't play. Still have some pictures and tapes though, even after 35 years!

I attended the Philadelphia show. Madness. We had a contraband USA flag draped over our friend's van at the preparty in JFK Stadium parking lot next to the show's venue: The Spectrum (both closed & almost destroyed venues now). I was 14th row inside The Spectrum for Neil & the Horse that night. They had not toured together in a while. Many periods of Neil represented that night. Billy T played keytar-bass for Mr Soul opener. People think of Neil as Mr Mellow due to the "Harvest" effect. This was one of the rowdiest crowds I had ever seen. Just insane on the floor. Watching security guards dealing with it all. I loved the pacing of the show & the different eras / songs & the humor (Neil's "mom" from offstage: "Neil, what's that funny burning smell coming from the garage?" Neil: "Oh that's just
