Randomly Blogged - Haiti Children's Choir: "When God Made Me", Conan Soundcheck: "POTG", Peter Gabriel: "Philadelphia", Sevenoaks RustFest

Haiti Partners Children's Choir performs Neil Young's "When God Made Me". (Thanks Liza!)

Shortly after the song's debut back in 2005, the significance and implications provoked one of the all time firestorms on Thrasher's Wheat comments. A comment by Matt M. sums things up as well as any of the many provocative interpretations:
"Keep in consideration that Neil Young is a musician and an entertainer.

He may very well have kept his real thoughts on God to himself, and set these lyrics to music and released them downstream to either collect as silt and drop to the bottom of the riverbed, or spawn and multiply farther along.

Either way, Neil has once again stirred the muddy waters of controversy.

And no matter what side you take, or what your reaction is, the fact remains that Neil knows how to spark a debate."

'Like [Young's] 'Rust Never Sleeps,' half of that dated back to five or six years earlier. Then all of a sudden, he had the album those songs fit on, and it's one of his best records."

    2. I know we have been a bit spoiled in recent years, but any talk of Neil's touring plans in 2010?

    3. Liza, I played this when you first passed on the link on another post.

Sometimes I wonder If Neil realises himself just how universal and influential his music has been over the years!

      Very appropriate in the circumstances.

Look I, am not really a religious guy, but when I first heard Neil do this on the DVD "Heart of Gold", with those beautiful Gospel singers backing him with the chorus, I soughta welled up.

If I ever were to be converted, it would be to here gospel singers like those on HOG each Sunday..they are just so harmonius...

Haiti and all those innocent victims....
'God' sure does work in strange ways hey!

      luv doc

    4. Doc, I feel the same way about those gospel singers on the "Heart of Gold" DVD.
And also it came to my mind, that Neil's music is so universal, when I saw these children of Haiti under these circumstances sing his song.

      Love, Liza

On Whether He Tries for Viral Hits: "We're not going for it, but it's definitely a fun thing to watch because you don't know what's going to go viral. 'Pants on the Ground' makes no sense. I guess that was 'American Idol,' but before that we had 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air' with Neil Young -- that makes even less sense. And before that was Zach Morris. That was our biggest viral hit, but there's no real way you can tell what's going to be viral. It's really exciting once it picks up speed, because it hits the 300,000 mark and then it's out of your hands and it's like watching election results. Like 'Oh my gosh!'"

"And ['Pants on the Ground'] actually got back to Neil Young. We got a call from a friend of ours who worked over at Conan. At Conan O'Brien's last show, Neil was doing sound check and did 'Pants on the Ground' -- my version of him singing 'Pants on the Ground.' It's insane. It doesn't make any sense."

    6. So much of what happens around Neil and his music doesn`t make sense when you try to analyse it.

Don`t think - just feel. And be happy to go along for the ride.

Yes, I sometimes wonder what it must feel like for Neil being a living legend. It`s like his musical reputation has taken on a life of its own.

Oh, and Rustfest in Kent?! Yes, yes, yes!!! Thank-you Thrasher!

      luv, Jill

    7. Not that we`re ever going to stop trying to analyse it all - that`s all part of the enjoyment of being a Neil fan(atic)!

      luv, Jill

    8. Doc, I`ve just seen your comment - I`m just investigating the Rustfest!

So,it`s a gathering of the NYAS (which I have to say I`ve only fairly recently joined), followed in the evening by a NY tribute concert.

Sounds great and yes, it would certainly be an opportunity to meet a lot of fellow enthusiasts! Yes, similar to the Trekkies, but with music and without the costumes, lol!

Of course you`d be invited Doc, although it could be quite a "trek" for you to get there and back!

      luv, Jill

What a wonderful clip...bless those sweet children!

Doc, the singers you mention are The Fisk Jubilee Singers and they are truly incredible. Their album In Bright Mansions is one of my all time favorites.

Their performance with Neil in the HOG film is perfect. My favorite part of the DVD is in the extras, where they show Neil warming up with them. Neil is playing these huge block chords going up and down the scale while they sing along in wordless harmony.
