Free Neil Young Concert in Toronto

UPDATE 8/25: Per comment below from well informed sources, this will not happen.

According to today's Toronto Star, Neil Young will be giving a free outdoor concert as part of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.

As we mentioned last week, The Neil Young Trunk Show directed by Jonathan Demme will premiere Sept. 14 at the festival.

The free concert will be held at Yonge-Dundas Square, downtown Toronto, Canada. Joan Baez will also perform.

We report. You decide.

Might be jumping the gun to call it a free concert. According to this...

"According to the Toronto Star, TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey says that although their appearances at the screenings may be brief, Young and Baez will 'probably bring guitars.' "

  3. Thanks Jim.

That does sound less of an event than the Sun's "Neil Young, will be giving a free outdoor concert".

    Like we said, we report.

    You decide.

  4. Yep, definitely some downgrading of expectations happening in the press. Friday on dose.ca:

Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square has hosted free shows by such musical luminaries as RZA. Now, you can add rock legend Neil Young to that list.

Shakey himself is scheduled to appear at Yonge-Dundas Square September 14 as part of a free public event for this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

The official statement coming out of festival HQ says Young is booked for "an appearance" -- along with director Jonathan Demme -- as they present a free screening of The Neil Young Trunk Show.

Outlets from Rolling Stone to Exclaim to the Toronto Star, however, are suggesting Young will be doing more than waving to the crowd. Rumours appear to have been set off after a photo caption printed in the Star said Young "will be giving a free outdoor concert as part of a more 'user-friendly' initiative."

There's been no further details about Young's public appearance, so reports of a show could be wishful thinking at best -- but hey, maybe if everyone hollers at Young super-politely on Sept. 14, he'll oblige the crowd with a few tunes. Start crafting those sparkly fan-banners, now.
