  1. I can't make out a lot of the songs, but from what I can see I think it looks pretty cool. I'd love to buy it, but I'm sure Neil won't release it early next year.

  2. i think it will...there's just too much hype and work being done for it not to come out....and if you can now pre-order...I think it will be out. Don't get me wrong Neil has done crazier things (Comes a time LP- track listing) so who knows for sure...but I think it'll be out 1/27/09...shoulda been out for Christmas...either way I'm getting it cant wait!

  3. Looks great! I love how the DVD's are coming in those little cases that the Performance Series CD/DVD's came in. I am getting the DVD because I like to enjoy all my concert DVD's in different places and am not buying a Blu Ray player to move between my bedroom and downstairs and then to my friend's and neighbor's houses to watch with them...who also do not have Blu Ray players.

I am mainly getting the Archives for the rare video so for me the DVD edition is perfect and I'm glad Neil decided to release it in both formats!

  4. I think it should be noted that that release date (if Amazon is to be believed) seems to have changed again, now to Feb 24 2009.

  5. I forgot to mention that it looks awesome!

  6. Why are some idiots giving it a 1 star review? Firstly, the thing isn't even out yet so it shouldn't be reviewed by anyone. And secondly, how can it possibly warrant such a low score? IT’S THE ARCHIVES for gods sake!

  7. In an interview for RS he stated taht it's going to come out on cd and on itunes as well?
And the date has been pushed back?
    Archives be damned :D

  11. From Rolling Stone:

RS: Is it going to be just BluRay, or BlueRay and DVD?

NY: It’s gonna be BluRay, DVD, CD. It’ll be on iTunes. It’ll be everything. But it’s not coming out until the BluRay comes out, because the BluRay is the cutting edge. The BluRay is the best quality, and that’s where it’s gonna start. We don’t want to put out the lesser stuff first and then everybody go, “Well I know what this is. We’re not gonna get the BluRay.” We’re gonna force feed them the BluRay.

  12. Neil: "We had some technical problems with it in the end, and the amount of time that we had to work it out was not enough. I wanted it to have a mode where you didn’t have to watch it, where you could just listen to it, and there’d be like a screen saver thing up there. As simple as that seems, that was one of the areas where we were not complete. But it’s a huge job, and there’s a lot of stuff."

So does that suggest that Test Pilot/Archives Guy jump the gun? Or is something else up. Seems mind boggling that TP/AG spends the amount of time on this blog and then...?

  13. Look how fucking thick that book is!

Holy crap! That book alone is worth $50!

Bring on the Archives! And to all the punks who are moaning about the price, if you save $20/week between now and Feb 24, you'll have $240.00!!!! That's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna put $20/week into an Archives envelope. If he pushes it back again (near certainty, eh?) I might make a profit!

  14. Stunning packaging, easily one of the most well-designed box sets I can think of. $320 is a lot of dough, but the packaging alone has just convinced me that this could be money well spent. I'm in.

  15. OH NO NOT AGAIN.....

Neil Young has delayed the release of his expansive "The Archives Vol. 1" once again - but is releasing new material from his vaults instead.

"Archives", scheduled to be released on January 27 2009, has been put back until April or May next year, while "Toast", an album with Crazy Horse, will be released in its place.

Recorded seven years ago, the album, which will be released in 5.1 stereo, features some songs that made it on to 2001's "Are You Passionate?", including "Goin' Home", alongside unreleased work.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about the release, Young said: "It's a mind-blowing record, and I don't think it's a commercial record, but it's great rock and roll, very moody, kind of jazzy.

"It was recorded in the same place where Coltrane was recorded, so there's a lot of heavy stuff in there. All of the live ambience for everything was all recorded, so the whole thing has got a massive sound about it."

  16. Holy Cowgirl in The Archives!

    date 1 > 27 January 2009
    date 2 > 24 Februar 2009
    date 3 > April/May 2009

What happened? The Archives Guy took the fans too seriously?

  17. OK I'm not rushing my BD projects anymore... No need investing now if Neil keeps on delaying the only reason I wanted to buy a BD player.

  18. I just can't believe this.

  19. What about releasing Time Fades Away (CD/DVD package) as a preview for the Archives Vol. 2 on January 27th 2009? That will fix the Vol. 1 delay for me.

  20. Since this new Amazaon date came after the Rolling Stone update, I'd be inclined to stick with the Amazon date. I believe Uncut misread what the Stone article said.

And (pardon the pun) not beat the Archives dead horse any further, I'm okay with just a DVD version because I can't imagine myself listening to all this unreleased material over and over again. As much as I love the 3 PS Archives releases so far, I rarely go back to them a month after their initial release. Its the same with the Dylan archives. And this comes from a guy who has every commericially released Neil Young (plus CSNY track) and Bob Dylan album on his iPod. I always go back to the albums I've always loved--Ragged Glory, Time Fades Away, After the Gold Rush, Mirror Ball, Rust Never Sleeps--and am just content to know I have all teh catalog around if I need it.

And wow, that booklet looks amazing.

  21. Ideally, it'd be cool with Blu Ray or whichever media works, if you could access Neil's Archives (I'm talking everything that's unreleased) and select what you were interested in...kinda like a library. That way the casual fan would be happy with the more commercial aspects of the original Archives release and the hardcore fans would be able to check out multiple versions of songs, rehearsals, outtakes, etc. Maybe I'm stating the obvious and that's what Neil has planned anyway...if this is the case, then I think Neil or archives guy should make it clear that those that invest in the technology will be rewarded with a ton of unreleased material

  22. Pushed back again...wtf. Anyways...Anyone else here think Neil has a good chance for a Grammy this year?

  23. In reply to "I believe Uncut misread what the Stone article said."
I hope so, but I don't think so. After all Uncut should be the first one to know if there's any delay because they for sure are planning a NY special if the Archives comes out. If the Archives would be released in January the Uncut February issue would have Neil on the cover. With the new information they have to look fro a new story on somebody else.

  24. Something tells me Neil won't release the Archives until he turns 65. How many other musicians from his generation are so busy producing new music that they can put off releasing their box set until they reach the age of retirement? None that I can think of. Not that Neil will retire at 65 but I think it really says something that he can wait that long.

An artist only thinks about their legacy once they are no longer relevant. When the Archives are finally released and Neil promotes the glory days of his past, then the present and future will take a back seat. Of course we can't wait to get our hands on it, but once it's out it will be the nail in the coffin of his career.

That is the biggest load of crap.

  26. ''...once it's out it will be the nail in the coffin of his career."

Neil released Live at the Fillmore East, Massey Hall and now Sugar Mountain, which are glories from his past, but he's still a relevant musician who puts on awesome shows.
