Just finished watching Cordoroy Plants.First, I love the title and the fact that Neil is willing to poke fun at himself. That self-effacing characteristic is very endearing and very much lacking among most "famous" people.Enjoyed the film overall. The reediness of his voice is something that does make me cringe at times, but the musicianship is fantastic.I think Daryl's artistic hand in splicing in footage during Be the Rain, Vampire Blues, Like a Hurricane and Cortez is quite well done. She's showing us things many would rather look away from -- the environmental consequences of our economic system, the cruelty and barbarism of past and contemporary regimes both in the US and other countries, the corruption and plunder by the oligarchic class, and the linkages between all of them. It's a heady stew.This production owes as much to her as Neil.
Thanks for the comment Knowledge Nomad. You're right about how Neil's video/films have been taken to another level over the recent years due to his creative collaborations with his wife Daryl.
In particular, we find that the camera work by Adam "CK" Vollick to be stupendous, especially on the 14 minute "Cortez the Killer." In addition, note the additional lyrics variation on the famous lost verse.

Fine comments on a very fine film - watched it at the weekend and greatly enjoyed. Only wish it had been longer.
ReplyDeleteNot to take anything away from the other songs and performances, but for me Cortez has always been kind of unique and holds a special place in my heart. To see and hear such an awesome version from Neil and the band after so many years is just a wonderful thing.
When I first heard the flubbed line “Corduroy Plants” on the vinyl “When Time Explodes” I thought, well that’s Neil. Being Neil. Real.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw he acknowledged “Plants” in the title of his concert montage again I thought “That’s Neil”. Is that not the reason we all gather to celebrate, commiserate, and just flat out enjoy the man, his muse and his truth? His being real. I expect nothing less. And am always left fulfilled. So few artists have that aurora today. Sadly. But I’m glad I’m still here and so is my main man. What a musical ride!😎
