NEIL YOUNG – UNRELEASED SONGS AND PERFORMANCES
THE ‘UNRELEASED ARCHIVE’: A CATALOGUE
Version 9.1, 30 March 2025
© Robert Broadfoot 2025
Dear Thrasher,
Seven years ago, Thrashers Wheat published a very early version of what I called the “Unreleased Archive”. It was around 100 pages long and the aim was to list details of all of Neil’s unreleased songs and covers known at that time. That document was also the foundation stone for the establishment of the Neil Young Unreleased – NYU group on Facebook.
A lot has happened in the intervening 7 years of course. Neil has released many of the songs and recordings which I featured in that first edition. Keeping it up to date has therefore been an ongoing job, and I have never actually got around to releasing an updated version, until now!
With the recent release of Neil’s official Archives Vol. 3, and with Vol. 4 still some way off, it seems like a good time to publish a very significantly revised and reorganised version.
As always, there are likely to be omissions and mistakes, particularly in the sections on the CSNY unreleased repertoire. And I would be very happy indeed if folks would make corrections, suggestions and comments for the next edition. More about the idea and background of the Unreleased Archive is explained in the Introduction to the document itself.
I hope you and the Thrashers Wheat community find it useful!
Keep on rockin’.
Best,
Robert Broadfoot
Thanks again Robert for all the invaluable research! So much unreleased, so much time. Lucky us.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I did not find Munich on the Hands Off list, Berlin and Frankfurt are there. All of those who have been busy organising I wish a peaceful yet powerful manifestation of American values and spirit. I went down all of the list and am very pleased to notice many places with people who have a very special place in my heart. You are the Americans I want to see and listen to.
ReplyDeleteI did not even realise hands off was outside of the U.S. (based on the .us) But I am glad it is!
ReplyDeleteI stand with ALL Peace Loving Inhabitants of this planet. We’re ALL in this together. I am EMBARRASSED beyond words by the “King” of America and his court jesters. I hope EVERYONE outside of the U.S. realises that ALMOST EVERY AMERICAN FEELS TERRIBLE ABOUT THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION AND THE BUFFOONERY. The rest of the U.S. T Rumpers, the sheep, will come to their senses as soon as they get hit where it hurts.
In the wallet.
Please be patient with them. With us. Us & Them?
There are 400 000 Americans living in Germany, a lot of them serving in the US armed forces, but also many expats and their families, add to this all the people who hold dual citizenship being children of earlier generations of American service people who married Germans and decided to stay. Probably all of these have an informed opinion and some of them might want to be heard, too.
ReplyDeleteIt is nearly impossible, if not completely & totally so, to protest anything while in active military. More especially so abroad. The “Hands Off” protest demonstration that I took part in was invigorating, to say the very least. Especially given that the weather was not so good. A very impressive turnout indeed.
ReplyDeleteNext Saturday is Anti-Tesla version 3.0
I have NO doubt this one will be @ least 3.0 x larger than the previous 2.
I only hope the World-Wide Media is televising. Especially as mentioned for the above serving abroad. Media coverage has not been great here in the states.
But that will change.
Sorry, Thrasher, for hijacking threads.
ReplyDeleteJust like the earlier version I also saved Robert's newest unreleased list to my hard drive. As NYA archives readers will have noticed he keeps coming back at Neil Young in the LTTE section with detailed questions and complimentary remarks. Robert is a Neil Young Sherlockian, a detective brooding over every single photo of the archive books. I would not be surprised if he were going about his work with a magnifying glass. Neil Young's remarks and Robert's conclusions and conjectures taken together provide for a general outline of what there is to come with the next archives volume. In a short E-mail exchange I had with him some time ago Robert expressed some modest and self-effacing surprise that his elaborate work actually is read very closely. It's been quite some time since the last "Rustie of the Month" has been proclaimed but for sure Robert Broadfoot's efforts deserve something like being recognized as "Grain of the years"?

ReplyDelete@Robert B - sorry to see all of your good hard research work overshadowed here.
ReplyDeleteAs stated, your immense dedication to NYU is greatly appreciated.

@Thrasher Don't worry for a moment. All the work on Neil and his discography pales into total insignificance compared with what is going on in America right now. Folks have got their priorities totally right if they are more worried about the political and social situation than they are about what Neil has or has not released! But one day hopefully the nightmare will be over and we can get back to focusing on Neil and his music!
