Ordinary People was incredible. Didn't know if we were just going to get some version of the Chrome Hearts previous east coast performances, but this was pure passion and indignation. Brought back the "take America back!" chant from the Sanders rally, the protest song dropped in hits like "if you're a fascist, go buy a Tesla." and (paraphrasing) mentioning that it's a tough pill for Americans to swallow that China is ahead of us as far as moving toward electric vehicles (I think that was the gist, though I am at peace being corrected by any other attendees). Terrific surprise to hear Big Box - a song I would have assumed unlikely to get dug out again any time soon. But, hot damn... Ordinary People with its loping, chanting, repetitive AND expansive nature felt so fresh and alive. Didn't matter if some of the cultural references might be a bit dated to an audience largely unfamiliar with this ripper, it still felt as prescient as the rest of his set (Human Highway even got a "dedication" to Kennedy. "The new one. Not the old one." - Neil).
ReplyDeleteIf this is any indication of how the world tour will shape up, it feels like a Living with War type event with NY and band laying his truth and his thoughts and feelings on American politics in 2025 out there with unapologetically and letting the audience do with that as they please.
One thing about the show. Lots of technical issues plagued most sets throughout the evening so, while I'm not sure, I wonder if NY had to cut anything from his set to abide by the local noise curfew. At the very least, Stills told Neil, before playing Rockin' in the Free World to do the "short version" - which still packed a great punch with the Chrome Hearts behind him.
Ordinary People! It's been 36 yrs!

ReplyDeleteIt only takes one song to make it worth it, and Ordinary People was obviously the one, like the Thrasher in 2016. Just enough to make you regret not being there
ReplyDeleteHot Damn! Spine tingley douche chills! I saw this performed ONCE in 1988 @ Jones Beach!
ReplyDeleteWonder if this will make it to the upcoming summer setlist? Or was it just a one off? Sounded Great! I can’t imagine Micah & the boys, Spooner, learning & rehearsing and THEN Nailing this sucker AND NOT include this in the setlist…
That being said, technical issues seem to be following Neil around lately. Both shows @ Forest Hills last year had issues. I wonder if he lost some key techs?
I’d be absolutely thrilled to hear any of these songs in Dublin this summer.
ReplyDeleteWas let’s roll again an updated version of the original lets roll?
ReplyDeleteSounds like he took the melody of This Land is Your Land to pen a piece about the failure of Detroit's Big 3 to produce good EVs and losing the race against Chinese auto companies. Nothing really to do with the original Let's Roll, apart from both are songs about global challenges the US has faced. Not a great song, but seems to work well within the populist spirit of the set. Wished I'd gone. I passed because I found last year's show to be pretty mediocre, but this looked great. Might rethink going to the HB show in the fall.
DeleteMicah is absolutely great in this role! A poor
ReplyDeleteman’s Nils and a rich man’s Poncho all rolled into one!!
Neil & Chrome Hearts bust out with Ordinary People! This has become a historic tour already. Let’s hope all the dates hold & we get to see them this summer for an Anti Oligarchy extravaganza! Now the peaceful revolution can commence with proper soundtrack! I love it!

It occurs to me that for the second time in his career, Neil has effectively stolen somebody else's band and made it his own. He took The Rockets and made Crazy Horse. And now POTR has become The Chrome Hearts. Although in the latter case, TBF, it was Lukas that pulled the plug on the band.
ReplyDelete@ Knowledge Nomad : Lukas announced that his band was going on hiatus. He cleaned up, quit smoking and drinking. And he learned to fly a plane. He also recorded a solo album. PotR will be back.

@ Thrasher : Thanks for all of this! For doing what you do! I owe you! Bend, OR?
ReplyDeleteI’m not familiar with the new song, but the description sounds like a sequel to Motor City (from the T-Bone days). “Let’s roll”, in this context, could be an automotive pun, but an odd choice of title given the US cultural baggage. (Before 2001, it would have been a general expression for motivation or encouragement, not especially freighted.)
ReplyDeleteSounds to me as though he's using it unironically in it's original meaning. You can watch the YT embedded in the article.
DeleteAaaaaaannnndddddd it's official! https://youtu.be/DQm2q2KbJL8?si=jLrvudEM1rVt95fp And, officially, "Let's Roll Again". No surprise there, but I am pleasantly surprised that the song has the same spontaneity that the live version last week had. Feels like it's true to that NY ethos of getting it out there as fast and as true to the source as he can get. Love the way the Chrome Hearts are developing as a band. It felt like, after the abrupt end to last years NYCH tour and the creation of the Hearts, Neil had mentioned that the band would be a low stakes thing, at least on stage, no epically long sets, a mix of acoustic and mellow electric... and now almost a year later and two singles in, the band seems to have rekindled an energy in him that is inspiring, exciting, and thrilling in equal measure. Massively stoked to hear how this album comes out... maybe it'll just be The Visitor again (there could be ways worse results!) but something feels special to me... like all the planets in NY's orbit/discography aligning.
ReplyDeleteFor me, The Visitor was inspiring and exciting. It was experimental. Some parts work better than others, but trial and error is needed for growth.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a strong document of its time, documentation being a tradeoff or flip side of the “dated” aspect that bugs some people. More important artistically, PotR gave NY a little rejuvenation at the right moment.
Oh, totally agree in regards to The Visitor... I think in my excitement to discuss the album cut of Let's Roll Again and my enthusiasm/speculation for the new LP, I threw in The Visitor as a comparison but failed to convey how urgent and alive that album sounded. Very underrated stretch of albums with specific tracks and albums still waiting to get their proper accolades. The NY style: make an album keep going album after album... ten/twenty years later, what was taken for granted at the time is eventually viewed as classic. Looking forward to everyone's immediate reaction to Talkin to the Trees!
