Neil Young has a new section in his online newspaper "NYA Times-Contrarian" called "Health" where he presumably will share various health tips.

In the inaugural "Health section" post, Neil discusses the benefits of walking with tips for beginners as well as, a story from his California ranch days.

I try to walk every day and I tell all my friends to walk as much as they can. Walking is a natural exercise for the whole body, and good for the mind. I am in my seventies and feel like 3 miles is a good distance. It’s not that far. Maybe an hour and fifteen minutes give or take. But start with a small amount of distance, one block or less, and work your way up slowly. You don’t have to be in a hurry. Walking is good at any speed.

I like to walk in the country or on the land, but for safety from falls its good to stay on a relatively smooth and predictable surface.

I can remember walking when I was in my early twenties. I would take a cup of coffee and leave it on top of a fence post when it was empty, then pick it up on the way home. Most of the time…. For a while there were coffee cups balanced on fenceposts in more than a few areas.
...
Walking is the best gift you could ever have.

As Rusted Moon notes, over the decades, walking has been a recurring musical theme with songs such as, "Walk On", "Walk Like A Giant", "Walk With Me", "Long Walk Home",  "Daddy Went Walkin' ", "Let Your Fingers Do The Walking", amongst many others. A search on Neil Young's Lyrics Database | Sugar Mountain reveals dozens of songs with a walking theme.  Like the song " People On The Street", for example:

"walkin' with the beat if it's not too slow
On the sidewalk scenes and the concrete canyon walls.
walkin' through the night up and down the avenue
In the steaming heat people walk in the street
Keep walkin' with the beat, walkin' with the beat"

In other Neil Young news, he has a new song and video titled "Love Earth".

  1. My dad used to walk about three miles a day. After he broke his hip he did a mile and a half in the morning and a mile and a half in the evening. Didn't really matter where he was on the planet but it was daily and he made it to 89 years old. He passed away waiting for his dinner/movie date in his favorite chair peacefully.

Now that my two books on Pilot Mountain State Park are in the production assembly line with editors, proofreaders and layout designers I think I'll get out in nature more, too.

What Neil Young is saying and practicing is a good example for us all...

  2. thanks Jim. good for Dad!

This is a case where Neil's quote should be ignored:

"Take my advice. Don't listen to me."

  3. "Sometimes when I go walkin', among the tall trees, I feel a light coming down on me. Under moon, under sun, I feel the Chosen One through the mists come walking here with me."

Before Walk like a Giant, there was No Hidden Path. Neil sawing away on Old Black and Ralph's drums like the most thunderous footsteps you ever heard.

I've been working on a playlist recently, combining some old and new songs:

    1. Love Earth
    2. No Hidden Path
    3. Shining Light
    4. Shape of you
    5. Milky Way
    6. She Showed me Love
    7. Green is Blue
    8. Help me Lose my Mind
    9. Human Race
    10. Song of the Seasons
    11. Welcome Back
    12. Don't Forget Love

--Mostly Barn and Colorado, but a sprinkling of CDII, hopefully underlining how the newer songs reflect the older ones and vice versa. Human Race was a late addition. I wanted more Barn, so to speak.

    World Record @ t-minus 1 week.
