Ragged Glory II - Neil Young and Crazy Horse Found Tapes: Are They The "Under the radar monster"?!

"Love To Burn" - Neil Young and Crazy Horse
via Song of the Day | NYA (Thanks Darren!)

Are the recently discovered Ragged Glory II Tapes the "under the radar monster" that we reported Mastering Neil Young & Crazy Horse Odeon-Budokan '76 + Tuscaloosa '73 | John Hanlon's Notebook | NYA?

Well, it certainly seems so and confirmed today on Ragged Glory : Massive Discoveries in the vault! | NYA.

Ragged Glory II, the double album, will be announced as a stand alone LP in vinyl, CD and High resolution digital, probably released in 2019 and possibly delaying release of other announced projects.

There appear to be 5 songs, with two versions of one, and one long extended take of another, totaling 38 minutes of undiscovered and unheard Crazy Horse. Could this be the long circulated bootleg "Ranch Rehearsals"? Some say yes, some say no, some say maybe? So use disCERNment, as always.

  1. Maybe a hybrid of Ranch Rehearsals and other stuff? Don't Spook the Horse... and importantly Born to Run.

  2. Ranch Rehearsals is just one from the 30 plus sessions of Ragged Glory, provably an early one. . You can note that Mansion on The Hill has different lyrics than the released version. Country Home, Over and Over, not on that tape, were recorded in the last days.

  3. @ rtg - right, and likely to include Neil's "Born to Run" (not Bruce's).

@ ab - thanks as always for dropping by with your incredibly vast knowledge of Neil arcane.

30 plus sessions?! really? wonder if that's 30 days worth of tapes?

  4. The NYA post says it was two weeks of sessions, two sets per day.

  5. Thanks Babbo. Always helps to carefully re-read posts.

So two weeks of sessions, two sets per day = 10-14 sessions. So how did the other ~15 sessions come together to total 30 sessions?

    numbers add up to nothin'...

ps - whatever happen to Scotsman, TopangaDays, Ian and others??? Those guys normally would've been all over this news helping us sort the wheat from the chaff. gone to pasture, we suppose.

well, we're very grateful for those who are still stopping by on occasion.

oh, well, the days that used to be...

Let everyone know we said merry christmas & koritfw!

  7. If you count each "set" as a session, two full weeks-ish gets you to 30.

And just FWIW, I still think Hanlon's "Next up is Tuscaloosa (under the radar monster), a previously and only partially mined album project from early in the 1973 Time Fades Away tour" speaks for itself. The Ragged Glory reissue is something separate.

  8. Yes, English language syntax suggests that the "under the radar monster" is Tuscaloosa.

    Time Fades Away III?

My best guess is that Ragged Glory II pushes Alchemy back a year. But it could just as easily push NYA vol 2 back to Xmas.

You know Neil and his enthusiasms.

  9. I agree with Ken and Babbo. When I first spotted the Tuscaloosa news in the Notebook, I figured it was the monster. Bascially JH is saying we found this tape of a 73 show and the setlist isn't even available online. So Tuscaloosa is under the radar because no one has heard it before compared to other TFA shows. It's a monster because it's obviously a really, really good show.

  10. Agreed. Tuscaloosa is the under the radar monster. Excited as I am about an expanded Ragged Glory, it only adds to the (growing) list of things that have been announced as coming soon but keep getting pushed off for other bright shiny things. I may not live to hear it all!

  11. Thanks all on "under the radar monster" clarifications.

Well, whether it's TFA3 or RG2 or whatever, it's all good monsters!

  12. Ragged Glory is one of my favorite albums with Crazy Horse and the comment that “as good if not better” is pretty awesome. If they keep looking we may never hear the stuff they already have, but at this point I’ll take whatever they release. Good times are comin.

But I have to turn away for you to stay alive.

  17. Ragged Glory II is pretty clearly delineated. The "lost" 38 minutes become disc 2. It's already predicted for 2019 release.

Tuscaloosa is like finding a lost chord. Let's hope it all works out. The shows before and after it are predictive of the set list.
It COULD be the TFA disc(s) for Vol 2. I suppose it COULD be PS 4.5. Maybe both.

In the past couple of months we've heard from Hanlon on Homegrown, Songs for Judy, Oceanside Countryside, Odeon Budokan and now Tuscaloosa. I'm just hoping he starts talking about Chrome Dreams in January and The Boarding House in February. Things SEEM to be rolling in a NYA Vol. 2 direction. How they handle the released albums from Time Fades Away to Live Rust is anybody's guess.

  20. There's something happening here, and it appears to me, that Neil Young is reacting to the Hyde Park communications disaster by increasing the output rate. In a response to a mail regarding tour dates for Europe I received this meaningful and telling NYA reply: "Unfortunately, we can’t share details about Neil’s touring plans until the dates are confirmed and announced. We wouldn’t want to give you information about upcoming shows only for plans to change or fall through.

Tour dates will first be announced in the NYA Times-Contrarian, so make sure to keep an eye out there for the latest information. Tour dates will also be added to the Timeline, but we often have our hands full with new music to release down here in the Vault, so the Times-Contrarian should be your first stop."

I also suggested that the Barclay Brawl needs to be put in the timeline and that Neil Young should write a "Come to Jesus" song. They did not respond to these quirky proposals though. These NYA people handling subscriber communication are doing great graciously managing a tedious task.

  21. Great news. Neil and CH!

TW have you seen the Dad and Ben letter in Letters to the Editor on NYA?

  22. Ragged Glory II yes yes YES! Who said you can't be 16 forever? But please just wait before announcing a fourth disc on ARC/WELD or my heart will explode.

  23. Mr Mercedes S 2 Ep 2 opens with Hodges playing Till the Morning Comes on vinyl. Such a strange and very short lil ditty. The French horn at the end reminds of The Beatles. Its obviously Young telling someone to get lost but he at least has the heart to not force them out on that twisty and treacherous road at night time.
