Peace Trail newly released pales in comparison to live POTR version, which is ethereal, nuanced and softly sung.

ReplyDeleteI've listened to both singles now, and Peace Trail (the song) is a good one. I'm not familiar with live versions, but didn't find this especially overproduced on its own merits. The voice effects sound to me like the singer's thoughts bouncing into each other and overlapping, as if we were inside his head.

ReplyDeleteI personally think that the album version of Peace Trail is fantastic. It really moves me like very few NY songs have for quite a while.
ReplyDeleteThe loose and round sound of Keltner is amazing, strong and very sweet at the same time. I like everything about that song, the melody, sound, guitar work, the auto-tune, everything. Very very good song IMO

ReplyDelete@Alexandre Berman--I agree. I'll check out live versions at some point, but I like this on its own merits.
ReplyDelete"Rainbow teepee sky" is absolutely a classic Neil Young image. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the album (besides Peace Trail and Indian Givers). I'm gently hoping that this album may bear a little more resemblance, aesthetically and musically, to Sleeps with Angels and Broken Arrow (album) than Ragged Glory or PP, which I enjoy but don't need volume two of. I'm also hearing, in this song, some of the spiritual concerns prominent on CDII and parts of Le Noise. In other words, if there's a balance on most of Neil's albums between songwriting and eardrum-blowing, mind-bending monster guitar jamming, this album may lean a bit more in the direction of songwriting. That's just a hunch and obviously I could be wrong, but based on what we've heard so far and the descriptions of the album as minimalist or stripped down (electro-acoustic?), that's what I think we may be in for.
In any event, I'm glad to have this album to look forward to! Impeccable timing, Neil.

They met in a bar (his favorite bar), but she was living in a teepee at the time.

I think both versions are great and I can't wait to hear the rest of this album. Sounds like it could be a good one.
