ReplyDeleteJust finished listening to the audiobook of "Special Deluxe." It was an enjoyable experience listening to Neil for a few hours each day while I worked.
ReplyDeleteI had my doubts about the book as I am not a car nut at all. However, I actually liked this one a lot more than Waging Heavy Peace, which I thought was an easy read but didn't have that much substance. as I felt he talked a lot more about recording sessions / tours which I found very interesting... Loved hearing about Zuma, CSNY 1974, and The Ducks. I could really picture the atmosphere being already familiar with the material.
I will say I began to lose interest in the last 1.5 hours of the 9 hour unabridged audiobook. This is where Neil started talking almost exclusively about Linc Volt / Tar Sands / the environment. It's not that I don't agree w/ Neil on the issues, I just don't care about the topics enough to listen to them for that long. I did learn one interesting thing though - Neil stating going 60mph uses half the amount of fuel as going 75mph.
I also wasn't that interested in the beginning... I don't really care too much about Neil's upbringing. But once he started talking about Squires I thought it was a solid book (probably 80% of the book being a worthy read / listen).
I found it funny how many cars of Neil have straight up broken down. There's been A LOT!

ReplyDeleteWe don't have the audio book. That's OK since the car drawings are nice to have in the print version.
But hearing Neil probably makes for a good listen too. 9 hours. wonder why WHP wasn't made as an audio book as well?
Both Neil's books are on audio. Haven't listend to the new one, but the first book had a great narrator.

Those portraits are extraordinary. If you look hard enough you can still see the Sugar Mountain Neil behind those eyes.
