From Rolling Stone reporter:

From Neil Young Revisits Seventies for a Spellbinding Carnegie Hall Show | Music News | Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:
Thankfully, Neil Young had no such surprises for the capacity crowd at Carnegie Hall. Instead, he treated them to an absolutely jaw-dropping two hour and 20-minute show that focused largely on his golden period of 1966 to 1978. He only deviated from that era for two songs from 1992's Harvest Moon, the 1989 obscurity "Someday" and a pair of covers by Phil Ochs and Bert Jansch. The opening notes of classics "Harvest," "A Man Needs a Maid" and "On the Way Home" sent shockwaves of recognition and joy through the crowd, who then listened to them in near silence.

It was, without a doubt, one of the greatest Neil Young shows of the past decade, at least when he wasn't playing with Crazy Horse.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold - Carnegie Hall, NY - 1.6.14

From A Temperamental Neil Young Starts His Run at Carnegie Hall - NYTimes.com By NATE CHINEN:
At times, there was a rustling quiet while Mr. Young fiddled with his harmonicas; these moments were often punctuated by exhortations or song requests. (“You guys finished?” Mr. Young groused at one point, shooting a look toward the balcony. “No, you paid real good money to get in here, so you should be able to listen to each other.”)

But whatever tensions gathered around the stage, they served a function, notably when Mr. Young was unpacking songs with a social or political bent. The tune that got derailed by the offbeat clapping, and then successfully restarted, was “Ohio,” which he wrote in response to the 1970 Kent State shootings, and recorded as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. It led into a grave, potent version of “Southern Man,” with Mr. Young tightening his voice into a blade as he spit the lyrics “I heard screamin’/And bullwhips cracking.”

Twice in the concert he paused to pay tribute to a fellow songwriter, beginning with Phil Ochs, whose final album, “Gunfight at Carnegie Hall,” was recorded in 1970. Covering the contemplative Ochs song “Changes,” Mr. Young sang in a muted lower midrange, and with a murmuring cadence. The other subject of his homage was Bert Jansch, whose haunting elegy “The Needle of Death” he recalled hearing as a young man; here it made for a chilling companion piece to his own “The Needle and the Damage Done.”

Why do I get a feeling this will be another NY pivot point?: Showcase of the new 'covers' album, or ( a la Neil) new material all around? **That Nashville show kinda snuck in didn't it?

  2. It would be great if it was an Archives Vol. 2 release show...

  3. ... or the PONO release show! No live music only Pono... What's the difference anyway?

  6. I predict "Greendale, Part 2", followed by greatest acoustic hits...

Ahh, more likely the latter, with some oddballs, covers, and newer ones thrown in...how about "Bandit" ?

  7. I've been trying to tell ya, PONO is dead!!

"Bandit" would be awesome!! As long as we're making predictions here, I predict he plays through his whole "covers" album and then throws in a handful of "favorites" so everyone won't go home totally pissed off. It'll have highs and lows but in the end, its Neil doing his thing so lets just nip the whining in the bud. It's pointless. Can't wait to see what he throws out there! Really can't wait until the Horse rides again!!

So who wants to predict what the Horse will play this summer? Pill set list or something new?!

  10. We're not going too far out on a limb here, but we'll venture to guess that there will be covers similar to Farm Aid '13 like Phil Ochs "Changes" and some vintage Cellar Door era tunes like "Old Man".

Now having said this, we can be certain these 2 songs will not be played. ;)

  11. Neil is an artist. Great things seldom emerge from remaining in your comfort zone. I think that people who get pissed when they go to a Neil Young concert and do not get to hear a 'greatest hits set list' don't appreciate the process; "You gotta grow to be tall!" Reminds me of the fans who hated Dylan for adding electric music to his venue. I am looking forward to the new stuff and growing my library of great music.

I will be there Tuesday night.

Hearing "Changes" live would be a treasure. And then to think I never heard of Phil Ochs until FarmAid last year!

  14. opener will be tell me why or hey hey. neil will not do any songs from the rumored covers album. he'll do the old stand bys and a bunch of new tunes.

i hope this is a precursor to a long solo acoustic tour with lots of rarities.

  15. Family commitment came up at the last minute and can't go tonight (Mon) ... but am going tomorrow (Tues) ... tough call whether to look at the set list or go in blind ... call me a wimp but in my heart I feel like I trust the MUSE 100% as long as its Neil's songs ... you see, a big part of the treasure is his songwriting and thus his songs ... so I'm totally praying he'll bypass the covers and go into his cannon or break out freshly written songs ... if its covers I hope I can jive with it ... its true that Neil in all the decades I've seen him has always, consistently brought his material to epic heights when he's played it live and so I've learned to love whatever he wants to play ... but I'd be lying if I said I don't love his own songs more ... I prayed he'd skip Americana live and he did ... hoping for the same but if its covers then bring it on!! Friends, so excited for all who get to be there tonight! We are sooo fortunate ... so many of the greats are no longer ... hope all enjoy and see you there tomorrow.

  16. At the Silverlake benefit in October where Neil last played solo, he included 'Someday' and 'War Of Man' in the setlist, so maybe he'll include those at his upcoming shows. 'Someday' would sure be a dream come true.

Like others have said, Neil will play what he wants, but I sure hope he includes some deep cuts in addition to the usual favourites.

  26. It was a beautiful evening, Carnegie Hall was warm and comfortable and Neil was in fine form, although his voice seemed fragile at times. While there were moments when he chastised those in the audience that wanted to shout out requests, he tempered his remarks, at one point reminding himself to "be nice." In the end it was an evening of reminiscing and gratitude. And some fine music.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It was an incredible evening. Neil played a set that could have made anyone happy. Enough "hits" for the casual fans and a good amount of rarities for us die-hards (first solo "Southern Man" in more than a decade). I've also never seen Neil have a less adversarial relationship with an audience. He was in a really good mood. Great show. Can't wait to hear the tape.

  30. This is amazing! Maybe the best solo acoustic setlist of Neil's that I have ever seen/heard!

I was tired of hearing him playing Blowin in the wind over and over again - but this just blows my mind!

Now who says Neil doesn't please his fans? :)

...now all you critics stand alone..

  31. Nothing will come close to hearing Neil live like I did when he was in Australia a few months back... But if only to see a solo concert would be the ultimate!!
Consider yourselves lucky to witness him in his most vulnerable of settings like so many years ago when he was just starting out!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Holy shit does that setlist look amazing! I would be completely devastated I can't make this tour, if I didn't have tickets for the Crazy Horse gig in Belgium in the summer... it still stings, what an awesome solo Neil setlist... Looking forward to the Year of the Horse!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The NY Times made it sound like Neil was cranky but that's not what I'm hearing here. Which was it?

    neg

    ReplyDelete
  34. Neil was a bit cranky with the idiots who kept on shouting out requests even after he siad, "You know, I've thought about this already and know what I'm going to play." When they didn't stop and others were shushing the rowdy shouters, he said, "No, that's fine. You paid good money to hear each other." He was wry and witty and only slightly cranky. He sounded absolutely luminous, though. The sound in that venue is unparalleled. Oh and the set list also includes two encores:
    Comes a Time
    Long May You Run

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm sure it was an amazing show. The setlist hits a ton of highlights. I'm somewhat disappointed that the newest song on the setlist was from 1992 though.

  36. I could not have been happier a s life long fan with over 30 shows experienced...this was the topper for me...beyond clarity in sound....always a few uncultured raving loons in the crowd...Neil handled them with aplomb...only bummer was the bogus t-shirts of questionable quality as well as them being made outside the US....sure to shrink into oblivion..I opted foe the "limited" lithograph poster...Neil is always amazing...The Horse will ride again...

  39. Funny... Neil finally pulls out all the stops and plays a greatest hits set, and now Rolling Stone reports it as "stunning". In the same article referring to the solo electric tour in 2010 as "bizarre" and "unsatisfying." These guys have been wringing their hands with little digs at his creativity and experimentation for years.

It just goes to show what side of the aisle Rolling Stone stands on - they don't value creative experimentation, only hits. Sounds like the author is a HOG toe-tapper who finally got his wish.

I'm sure it was an amazing show, but I just thought it a good idea to point out Rolling Stone's sudden praise, and how it's wrapped in disdain for his more creative undertakings.

  40. Thanks all for reports and comments!

Once again, a little something for everyone.

Funny how even here at TW we see a comment on "No new songs!" :)

@Matt - actually the RS guy Andy Greene has been covering NY for years and seems to know his Neil. Actually agree that Le Noise was somewhat bizarre for the casual fans.

And that, my friend, is the essence of NY's fan base. The diehards love the experiments and the casuals want the hits.

Maybe Neil can have separate tours someday? Small gigs with new & obscure songs and greatest hits gigs for the Heart of Gold crowd?

Bet that would work real well...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shoot me now. We got stuck at Chicago airport Monday and couldn't get back in for the show. Two Carnegie Hall tickets wasted! I'm going to jump!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Rust Radio (God Bless Em!) is playing the show right now. Just tuned in at the beginning of Needle of Death...astounding. Damage Done just finished, and now Neil is talking about Ben Keith and buying Hank's guitar. Can't wait until they repeat this show...thank you friends!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Last time I saw Neil (United Palace Theater) I was extremely annoyed by the people yelling out stuff, especially during pauses within a song. We didn't pay a lot of money to hear you idiots scream stuff out. So glad Neil had something to say about it this time...

Revel in the music, clap and cheer between songs, but stop with the shouting requests and "I love you" and whistling loudly, etc.

We don't want to hear YOU... We want to hear Neil.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Doubter ( but fading)1/07/2014 04:04:00 PM

Bravo Ol Neil :) the best show Ive seen of more than 30 was the BCT in 1999 which this reminds me of. man I wish I was there. finally leaving the nonsense that is the PP record behind, at least for now. Enjoy Rusties.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Thrash - Yeah, okay, maybe I'm being a little too cynical.

Certainly Le Noise was "bizarre" to someone who has no idea what Neil's been doing for the past 30 years, but it wasn't bizarre to me, having the context of knowing his entire back catalog and all the experiments he's done along the way.

Couldn't Mr. Greene just praise the concert he loved without inserting little digs at Neil's more "bizarre" undertakings?

Also, can the mainstream media please find a replacement for the word "bizarre" in their lexicon? The overuse of the word "bizarre" among MSM reporters/editors is bizarre.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Also, I'm not even a huge fan of Le Noise. I've had trouble getting into it. So I don't mean that all as a defense of Le Noise. But if this guy has been covering Neil for years and knows his stuff, why would he refer to Le Noise as "bizarre"?

It's not even bizarre. It's an interesting sound collage and a fascinating collaboration between two artists.

What about art can truly be called "bizarre" anyway? Maybe it's just that word. Had he used, "experimental," he'd have made perfect sense - the word bizarre is a completely subjective adjective, and doesn't really say anything except that the person using it is confused by the subject.

  48. Neil has often said in interviews that he isn't interested in looking back but his set lists almost always include a substantial number of his "hits" and Monday night's show is a lot more of the same. Isn't he utterly bored playing Old Man etc thousands of times? Maybe he needs to give those back catalogue revenues a boost.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Speakin' Out from NY - YEAH! What a great collection of songs to perform. Listening now on Rust Radio makes it's soooooo nice to be a Neil fan, even without a ticket this week. If you can't dig this show, you must be 6 feet under.

    Rock on Neil....

  50. Hey Gassy Jackass, he's only played it 569 times live which comes out to like 14 times a year for the last 42 years. So I think the answer to your question is "NO". There's got to be one whiner in the bunch. Sheesh!
