Recently we heard someone remarking about that controversial video for "Wrecking Ball".
Really don't see what the fuss is all about?
Here's 1989's "Wrecking Ball" by Neil Young. Quite lovely and family friendly, in fact. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteI never really liked Freedom, actually. I like a couple of songs, but overall I rate it as one of my least favourite Young albums. The singing on the acoustic Rocking in the Free World is really bad, for instance.
ReplyDeleteI like at least 25-30 of his records better. Wrecking Ball is kind of nice, though.
I don't get the joke about the video but I sure love that song! Long been my favourite off that album.

ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous @12:09 pm yesterday, how's it going? I'm interested in knowing which songs on Freedom that you don't like. Or is it more the recording quality/sonics that you don't enjoy?
ReplyDeleteThe twelve songs listed below include a number of classics that Neil keeps in his musical tool bag, and others which would be great to hear any time he chooses to reactivate them. Obviously there are Wrecking Ball and the two versions of RITFW--and when was the last time Neil performed this aoustic--but also Crime in the City (amazing during the Smell the Horse Tour), Don't Cry and No More (which was the other song he performed on SNL back then).
Add in Someday, a beautiful number that I just heard on Rust Radio with Neil and the International Harvesters, and Too Far Gone (incredible), then the amazing deconstruction of On Broadway (remember this was the pre Disney cleanup version of NYC he's singing about). You're left with two songs--Hangin' On A Limb and The Ways of Love--and even those are pretty darn good.
Rolling Stone gave Freedom 5 Stars ("Classic") in a review by David Fricke. Robert Christgau gave it an A rating, and he doesn't exactly hand a lot of those out. I loved it when it came out, still listen to many of those songs. In many ways, it's similar to Dylan's album New Morning; reviews at the time tended toward the "we've got the real Neil Young back" slant. Didn't see the tour, which was in between the Blue Notes and the Horse tours. But maybe Neil agrees: he only has one star on his hat (ha ha).
We all like what we like, and there's lots of Neil for us to share. So just curious on this one...thanks a lot and keep on rockin'!

ReplyDeleteI like Crime in the City and the electric Rockin' in the Free World. Eldorado is nice, No More is okay. I like Too Far Gone better in earlier live arrangements.
Freedom isn't bad, but I find it a bit mediocre. The production sounds very different too.
