Thanks Thrasher. Buffalo Springfield has been good for Stills. Focused. Disciplined. Singing better than he has in years. Even thinner.
ReplyDeleteStills has looked lost for years and has been playing in a band (CSN) with guys who don't really want him around. Hopefully this Springfield experience will inspire good work from him.
All these shaky, hand held films with weak sound. I really hope we get a professional recording out of these shows. Having been at Bridge I can say they sound incredible in person.
right on Raincheck...I think ADD manifests itself in the public's love for any Artist, in terms of commercial success at least...I personally haven't followed NEIL as diligently as lotsa folks here, I tend to stick with the NEIL songs I've always liked...that's neither good nor bad in Neil's case IMO cause like any true Artist, he keeps going regardless of the size of his audience...I think Neil records all HIS shows (video and/or audio) so maybe he's recording the Springfield shows...that would be (almost) as good as being there, for me at least...
ReplyDeletethe part I left out (oops) was the idea that except perhaps for die hard fans, CSN is not quite as popular as they once were...which seems to be true of a LOT of Artists...again it kinda feels like an ADD thing...
ReplyDeleteWell, asg, to be fair to the fans, CSN haven't exactly kept themselves on the front burner. And not just commercially, I mean artisically as well. Croz, for example, did most of his best work the last 20 years with CPR. CSN has not made albums, like Neil has, that mae fans want to come heat teh new songs.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, from teh start of the Springfield through Manassas, Stills output was incredible. The next few years were mixed, but he still had some great stuff. And, to your point, he gets very little of the respect due for that.
fairly right on again Raincheck...it's prolly hard to stay on the "front burner"-I think unlike most Artists, who (naturally) wanna stay in the public eye and be commercially successful , Neil couldn't care less...which is one reason I am such a fan...

ReplyDeleteThe same can be said for Neil & Richie too as far as being focused and disciplined as well as having the time of their lives. Were things totally perfect? No, there were missed chords, mistaken notes, but in a way, that added to the 'charm' of the performances. At the same time, they managed to have avoided the 'nostalgia' feel of the evening, and made the songs relevant in the current day. The Buffalo Springfield 2011 tour is the tour of the year. Maybe even the decade.
ReplyDeleteAll of the Buffalo's shows are being taped and it remains to be seen whether or not a DVD(s) will be released.
Saturday night at Solid Sound, I saw a young teenage boy walk by holding a vinyl copy of the first Springfield album. He seemed to be around the same age I was when I first bought that album...the torch is passed!
