Carl: 1996 - 2010

Neil Young and Carl
Nashville, TN - June 2010
Neil Young's pet dog Carl has passed on to that great doghouse in the sky.
Carl, a Labradoodle, was 14 in doggie years.
Carl was featured prominently in Fork in the Road's "Johnny Magic" video, riding along in the back seat.
To say that 2010 has been the best of times and the worst of times would be quite cliche. Accurate or not, we all wish Neil & Pegi a less eventful 2011.

Oh, so sad... I am especially glad now to have gotten that particular picture. Neil was just coming back from taking him for a walk.... such a cute dog.
lost my pup Jazz in 2006 -Doggone shame
RIP Carl
here is a verse for my Jazz
I knew a puppy, the best friend a man could have.
Brittnie named her Jasmine, but we all called her JAZZ.
Pick up a stone ,and throw deep in the woods.
Jazz would go 'n get it, Ridgeback was in her blood.
@Sandy - yes, so glad you got to see the man & his dog.
A great photo and thanks for sharing.
thanks for the link, Thrasher. How do you guys like the Broken Arrow carpet BTW?
Neil will definitely have no shortage of heartbreak from 2010 to draw from on the 2011 album. Talk about "A roller coaster ride".
I heard a perfect echo die
Into an anonymous wall
of digital sound
Somewhere deep inside
Of my soul.
Still seeing the Vista.
Honeyslide.
Actually, the old guy was 14 in people years. In doggie years, that hybrid hit nearly 100!
Losing a buddy like that is hard. We lost our 12yr pal Clyde a couple years ago. A beautiful and happy Golden Retriever that we'll always have in our hearts and minds here at home. His successor is a nutty lab mix rescue we named Zuma (that's why I felt it ok to ramble here). He's a good dog and is our son's best bud. Here's to Carl, long may he run.
This is more sad news for Neil. When we travelled to New York to see Neil in 2007 we made a point of going to Central Park area close to The Carlyle, where he stays, hoping for a glimpse of him walking Carl in the park. It was not to be.

Very sad news...I felt quite emotional when I first saw this earlier today. My heartfelt condolences to Pegi, Neil, Ben and Amber. Carl was a beautiful dog and I know you must miss him terribly...you've all been through so much this year.
There's nothing in the world quite like a good dog. The complete trust and pure unconditional love you get every day is one of life's true treasures. In my lifetime, I've loved and lost six faithful canine companions, and I still think about each of them on a regular basis. Also many cats who were family members and remain alive in my memories.
My dog Henry is a six year old Goldendoodle who looks very much like Carl. He comes from a breeder in New Brunswick, so his "Canadian Prairie Home" and his lookalike qualities made this seem like real serendipity when I first saw pictures of Carl and the Johnny Magic video. All breeds are great, but there's something about Golden and Labradoodles that makes them especially loving and fun to be with.
Henry was very sick last week, the first time in his life that this has happened. I was away from home most of the time, and would call each day to see how he was doing. I flew home late Saturday night, and when I walked in the door he was there to greet me. Seeing him excited and wagging his tail, acting like his old self was one of the best welcome home presents I could ever receive.
Thanks again to Sandy for her wonderful photo and for clueing me in awhile back to the Johnny Magic video. And my thoughts are with Neil and family...anyone who thinks "well it was only a dog" just doesn't understood the kind of bond you can have with an animal.
Sorry to hear about your loss, Neil. Animals are such amazing creatures. They really become part of the family...part of your life. It's like losing a good friend when one passes on, a good friend that never put you down or judged you, just loved you for who you are. They just want love in return.
Rest in peace, Carl.
well, we have to bury my dad's sister on thursday, and mom's brother may not make it thru the day with cancer, so, sorry about Carl too, but I wish death would take a holiday - starting last year.
Well, this has certainly been a mixed year for Neil but the overriding theme seems to be been loss in different shapes and forms.
A great photo Sandy, how lovely to see Neil in a relaxed `off-duty` moment with Carl. Well done for having the presence of mind to get that shot!
Hi SONY, sorry for your loss, it must be a very hard time for you and your family. Take care.
RIP Carl.
Thanks for the nice comments on the photo. I am proud of it and it means alot to me. But Jill, I assure you I didn't have "presence of mind". I was so nervous, I couldn't get my camera out of my skirt pocket and asked Neil if he could wait just a second so I could get it. He very nicely waited and then gave me a big wave and a smile.
Sandy
Sandy, that doesn`t surprise me, that`s just what I`d be like in front of the Great Man! Just goes to show yet again what a real sweetie Neil is. Thanks for sharing it with us all.
and there's even a broken arrow floormat. what a country.
i saw carl (and poncho) out in the crowd at the '03 greendale show in auburn. nice dog.
Sandy, I'd probably be just as nervous if I ever had a personal encounter with Neil...but you never know until it actually happens. I've met a good number of performers and other famous folks; sometimes no nerves but other times it happened. Talking with Corin Tucker after a show in late October, I suddenly became flustered telling her "I'm a big fan" etc. But she was very friendly and it was no big deal. And I got an autographed copy of her new LP with a dedication "Keep on Rockin' In The Free World"...pretty cool!
Also I remembered that it was Jill who gave me the info about Carl and the Johnny Magic video...so thanks again Jill. And RIP Carl...as my sister texted me, "he must have had a great life".
Hi mr henry, yes I think it was me, thanks. I remember you telling me how alike your dog Henry was to Carl. I loved that Johnny Magic video (and song!)from the first time I saw and heard it but now it carries with it an extra dimension of poignancy....
Yes Jill, I love both the song and the video. Glad that Neil shared this with everyone...in the words of the great Lou Reed:
There's a little bit of magic in everything,
And then some loss to even things out.
Saw an exceptional club show last night with Pegi Young and Bert Jansch. The place was packed but everyone there was very quiet and listened intently...good job folks! Pegi played a wonderful opening set, and boy what a band she has with The Survivors, including Rick Rosas and Spooner Oldham. Larry Cragg was doing the tech setup stuff, and I think that I recognized some other people there as well. Very cool to be w/in 50 feet of the stage and to see these guys so close up.
Pegi was in great spirits and raised a toast to Ben Keith near the end of her set. She talked freely with the crowd and sang with her heart...thanks so much to Pegi and The Survivors!
Bert's set was superb and he looks to be in good health. I stood next to Larry during the first song, which made it even a bit more memorable. Every song Bert played was excellent, and his voice is sounding better than ever.
One special number was written by Brendan Behan, the great Irish poet and playwright. Bert said he "first heard it when I started playing in the folk clubs at 15 years old and it always stuck with me" and that he'd heard it performed by Brendan's brother...wow!! He told some great stories between songs, including one about playing a show with Pete Doherty...when he asked the crowd "how many of you know who that is?", I was surprised how few there were...but it was mostly an older crowd. After a generous set, he then performed a two song encore...thanks so very much Bert. I hope to see you perform many more times.
So just a wonderful night of music from some really amazing musicians. The tour continues for another ten days, so try to catch them if you can.
Carl looks so much like my goldendoodle named Cinnamon Girl. She is so sweet, and I know Carl must have been a very sweet dog!! I watched the Johnny Magic video, and Carl reminds me so much of Cinnamon!!!
