A major Neil Young interview in The National Newspaper by Peter Howell.

A must read. As interviewer Peter Howell so observantly, insightfully and expertly writes:

"You just never know which Neil Young you’re going to get.

When I was flying to California to interview him, he made me change my flight reservations seven times because he kept changing his mind about where and when the interview would happen."

See full interview The National Newspaper as preview for upcoming Musicares "Person of the Year" Honors.

Thanks neilyoung.org - Neil Young links - reconnecting thoughts and actions!

UPDATE: Sharry on Rust posts that much of this "exclusive" interview is actually recycled from an earlier in Toronto Star. Thanks Sharry!

  2. Thanks.

You're right much of this is recycled as noted in the update based on Sharry's post.

We'll try and tighten up our editorial standards around here. I'm going to fire off a letter right now to the editor about how this post was an unnecessary waste of folks time.

    All apologies. Shame on us.

BTW, can you write to the National complaining about how they put "Exclusive" just prior to mention of Musicares award without noting this was a re-print from the Star?

That might prevent such a situation ever occurring like this here again.

ps - can you cc: us on your letter?

thanks for posting this interview. I didn't see it 6 months ago, and better yet, who cares.

All the Neil that's fit to print. I guess when we don't see it any more we'll know you stopped caring about it.

  6. Thanks Thrasher.

I really miss reading about what Neil's up to at the moment. This time last year, we were about to go into overdrive.

But it's reassuring to know he's still out there, somewhere... He'll be back, I know...

  7. I think we are all suffering from "AG" withdrawal lol
With Archives Guy being so great about communicating the happenings of Neil/Crew and all the goings on and then Lincvolt feeding us LIVE info day after day we are all feeling a lull in info so this was a nice read no matter the original date of release.
    Thanks Thrasher for the conduit!

  8. Serious mode:
The fascination of being a Neil fan is Neil's alluring persona to be both elusive and allusive.
( I just like the sound of those 3 words, probably totally inappropriate, but like Neil, who gives a rats!)

Other than Pegi,I don't think anybody will ever get "real close to Neil"..hundreds have tried...
to analyse, categorise, pidgeon hole, criticise, idolise, imitate, agitate,
    politicise and polarise.

That mystique ,that spontaneity is his appeal..Jimmy came close to exposing this in "Shakey"..a lifelong, exhausting, frustating chronicled biography(for Jimmy of Neil's life! thus far
Obviously, Peter Howell is another recipient at an attempt to get into Neil's head, to expose a chink in "Neil's Armour".
What Peter's Interview succeeds in doing is remind us of Neil's generosity, his eccentricity, his brilliance, his stubboness to conform his evasiveness..everything that will keep his loyal fans intrigued until that Day "When he doesn't care anymore"

    Long may you run Neil!

    luv Doc

  9. This post reminds me about how whenever you read something from a journalist that you know a lot about (in this case Neil) you realize how far off they really are ... true they don't call Neil "Shakey" for nothing but I thought the tone of the article was overly critical of Neil and framed his breadth in a pretty negative way ... also, the fact he doesn't want to appear at these Neil fests is understandable ... he probably appreciates the recognition but most of all probably wants to just do his thing without the all the hoopla and fanfair, in my book that's a good quality not a bad one ...
