Topango Canyon #1, Disc #2: 1968-1969

Here's today's daily open thread on the Neil Young Archives where you can post thoughts and questions.

Archives Guy seems to be checking in on occasion as time permits. But if you know the answer to folks' questions, please try and help out, to free up AG to focus on newer issues.

Got a report? Drop a comment below. No registration required.

Also, see The Neil Young Archives for FAQ's and tutorials.

Again, feel free to post here your concerns and questions. But also try and resolve through your distributor. If you ordered from WB site, call 866-430-6230.

Another source of good answers to questions is good old fashioned search. There is a search box on right about midway down. If you include "Archives Guy" (with qoute marks) and your question, it might just come up.

And -- as always -- see Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.

ps - As we mentioned recently, we're dealing with some heavy traffic here @ TW so apologies for slow loads. With the Europe tour and Archives, we have record levels of traffic from around the globe. Quite exciting if you're a data geek, you can watch TW traffic in real time (and always in right bottom sidebar.)

pss - We've just established reciprocal agreements with Amazon Canada and Amazon UK. If you're still looking to order NYA (or anything by Neil) via Amazon, please consider using links on right. Thanks! You'll be helping to support Thrasher's Wheat and keep the servers cool now that hell has frozen over.)

  3. Thanks Theakston in UK for the report! But bummer on delay. Stay positive, man. We're sending some vibes your way.

    And Folks,

Just a friendly reminder regarding Archives questions.

It seems that temperatures are starting to drop after a hectic first few days since release. As mentioned above, there is a lot of info out there about all types of NYA questions and issues.

Please follow the above sources as a first step.

With that said, feel free to air your thoughts here. Try and be cool and patient and relax and breathe deep.

Lastly, we know there are tons of positive stories out there. But they're too busy enjoying NYA to post. But let us know if you come up for air something positive.

Otherwise, don't let it bring you down, it's only the NYA working out the kinks.

    Smile on your brother.

    peace & love,

  6. Borders update--the sticker price on the blu-ray archives at the Borders I went to (Michigan Ave in Chicago) was $349.99. I used a 40% off DVD box sets coupon (http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/coupon40dbs0611.asp?cmpid=SL_20090609_NR) that expires today. Now I have to wait until I get home from work!

There is no release date for FITR BD right now.

  8. I'm posting this again for UK fans

You can order the blu ray set for $286.47 including postage from amazon US. It is still in stock. Yes it will be the better part of a fortnight in arriving but thats beats the whenever if at all delivery from the UK site.

    Good luck.

  19. Hello Archives Guy!

#1 -- Thank you so much for answering technical questions and congratulations to you, Neil and the entire Archives Team on a job well done.

I am noticing a technical glitch. A friend of mine is also having the similar problem. I downloaded new BD Live material and now some videos and screens do not display properly.

    Here is what happened:

I received the Archives on June 1st and watched all of it over a course of 4 days! All disc played fine - no problems!

I did get a screen saying I had new material with option to download now or wait until later - I waited since I did not have a memory flash drive.

A few days later I picked up a USB Flash drive for my Blu-ray player...
Put in Disc 8 "North Country" into player.
Received the screen that said I have new material from NY.
    Downloaded all into player.
Went to time line see what it was.... realized it was material for Disc 0
Took out # 8 put in Disc 0 -- view time line -- saw the BLUE pin
Listened to new material -- VERY COOL!

When I put Disc 8 "North Country" back in.... when I go to "MORE" screen Background pic does not display. I can still navigate around the MORE screen but hidden files - videos won't play (they would before I download the BD live stuff). All that happens is the picture of Neil sitting in the Jeep appears - but no navigation available. Have to restart player.

    Here is my equipment:
    SONY BDP-S350 Blu-Ray Player -- latest firmware & USB Flash Drive 64Gigs
    Onkyo TX-NR801 100 watts x 7 channels -- optical input 24/96 audio
    SONY KDS-R60XBR1 HDMI inputs 1080i

Everything worked great until I downloaded the new material…

I tried disconnecting USB Flash drive and restarting --- got the screen saying I have New Material – skip to MAIN MENU – still having problem with “MORE” screen on Disc 8.

    Any input?

My friend is also having similar problems with MORE screen and certain things not displaying, he has the latest Onkyo and a new SONY PS3 and having similar trouble.

    Thanks So Much!

  21. FYI
In case anyone is wondering about the turnaround time, when ordering INDIVIDUAL discs thru the Warner Bros. site...

I ordered 4 Blu-Rays on June 3rd, and today I received an email with the following:

"Our records indicate the release date for the items on your order is June 30, 2009"

I already have the DVD box, so the wait isn't a big issue.
    Cheers

  22. Archives Guy -

How about putting a list of BD players that have been tested OK with the archives on the FAQ?

Its not easy to decide what player to buy- and reading about people having trouble with new players that meet the requirements makes me worry.. (LG 370 and others).

And yes, i know it woks fine with the ps3, but not everyone wants a game console

When starting a new song from within file cabinet, usually by selecting the >> symbol, I'm missing hearing the first second or so of the song. I'm using a PS3 into a Yahama RX-663 via HDMI. Any thoughts?

And I could watch the Joel/Neil barn videos for hours. I really like hearing Neil's perspective on everything. More, more of that.

That is a new one on me.

Shall look into it and get back to you.
In the meantime, why don't you go to the download manager on the Timeline (use Pop Up Menu to activate) and delete the download.
See if the Disc 8 then behaves correctly. You can download I Wonder again, later.

By the way it doesn't matter which disc you use to download BD-Live. Just because I Wonder is a Disc 0 download, you don't have to have that disc in to use it.

  32. RE: Mr Soul video ---

I could be very wrong on this one, but after watching the video, it is my understanding that the Springfield were playing to a pre-recorded track. Nothing seems in sync, and the ending just cuts out in a rather humorous fashion. I didn't think it was a problem with the disc, though if it is, I guess I've got that problem too.

Yeah, I agree. That comment from AG, however you look at it is quite frankly, rude.

I've been behind BluRay since the start, and now we're just second rate customers.

AG, i know you have nothing to do with marketing at all, but there was no need at all for that. I dedicated good time and money to get the right setup for NYA on BluRay, and to have you say that we should just stop complaining and go pay MORE than we already have is pretty insulting.

Damn straight we're impatient, especially those of us who ordered at day one, so no wonder we're complaining.

We may be just "customers" to you, but we're also the NY fans who actually take the time to post on here, because we are interested, excited and now annoyed, at the new BluRay format.

Sure, you'll just ignore this comment, or pass it off as complaining, but when UK *FANS* not just "customers", who can buy from anywhere, are being left in the dark, I feel we have the right to complain. Especially when we're a few days away from Neil Young hitting the UK to promote this thing.

To everyone who has their purchases, enjoy. Maybe the rest of us, the "lesser" fans will get the NYA too someday.

    Another UK fan.

  37. Hello AG,

To start, this is so cool, even for we dvd folks!

Is your Riverboat (dvd) disc timeline functionable?
I get no arrows and only a 'back' button.

Have found no video footage, if there. I thought that clip, up on youtube a few years ago (perhaps that wasn't Riverboat but a different gig) would be somewhere. Sob.

It appears the disc was authored very early on, as it doesn't follow the footprint of the previous discs.

    Very cool and thanks.

  38. I do feel badly for our UK brothers and sisters who are anxiously looking out the window, waiting for a delivery truck to pull up any moment. But still, if the biggest problem is that the Archives have been so popular that you're having trouble getting them, it's a *good* problem, if ya know what I mean.

Another thing to think about: I guarantee that the Neil Young Camp made plenty of copies of the Archives... based on the orders that your local retailers put in. that's how manufacturing works, folks. You build a certain amount based on what people commit to buy. What all this means is that you local retailers, be it Amazon UK or otherwise, were too conservative with their sales projections, and now you're paying the price while they scramble to get more. You have to understand, your anger should be focused at them, rather than the Archive Team. Make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Archives Guy -- thanks for responding.

I followed your directions and the problem still persist.

    Here's a little more background...
on Disc 8 I go to the MORE screen I don't get the barn set-up.. instead I see Neil in the Jeep.... I can see the words TIMELINE WEBINFO DISC CREDITS etc. and can navigate to them.

SO... if I go to WEBINFO I get the file cabinet... if I click BACK on file cabinet I get the MORE menu again but now the file cabinet picture stays.

I can navigate up to the RE20 mic and click on it but the video does not play. Same with the AMP Speaker. I can see it and click on it but the video does not play.

If I go to the timeline I can see everything but if I go BACK the MORE menu now the timeline pic stays and the WEBINFO DISC CREDITS etc are over the top of the timeline pic.

All this worked when I first played it... I'm stumped???

Sorry to be a pain... If you are ever in Upstate New York... I'll buy you Dinosaur BBQ and some Saranac Beer!!!

But still, if the biggest problem is that the Archives have been so popular that you're having trouble getting them, it's a *good* problem, if ya know what I mean.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I know it's easy as I sit here with my copy (although still 100 miles away from my BD player), but think about it this way: Sales have totally exceeded everyone's expectations, and if the Archives have taught us nothing else, they've taught us that expectations can be a motherf*&^&%r.

On other notes, I'm pleased to report that I have been so far highly successful in my short amount of time exploring the BD version with my PC. PowerDVD 7.3 was an almost total fail, but ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 9 has been just about perfect so far as I can tell. The mouse doesn't work in most places, but navigating with the keyboard is pretty functional.

My only concern is whether I will be able to find all of the hidden items with being only able to move four directions. For example, I was unable to find one of the hidden tracks on Topanga 2, but I did find a feather at the end of the timeline, which I wasn't sure if it was it. Anyway, I couldn't navigate to click the feather, so I don't know what that means.

  49. Back to “expectations,” anyone who is complaining about there not being enough unreleased material on this set is on crack. One can look at the tracklisting and say, "Oh, look. 3 different versions of Sugar Mountain and Heart of Gold. What a ripoff." But those people obviously have no idea what they're talking about.

I think I can safely call myself a "Neil Young expert", and I can say that there is virtually NO redundancy in this set, and as someone who has been planning for the last several months to create a set that "fills the holes" in this set, there are almost none, and what holes do exist, I am believing more and more they will be filled by Neil himself over time through BD-live downloads.

For example, having two studio takes of the same song with the same musicians is a redundancy. Having two live cuts of the same song from the same tour (presumably with the same musicians) is a redundancy. The closest thing to a redundancy that exists on here are any overlap songs from The Riverboat and Canterbury House.

As for the holes, my proposed setlist is growing shorter and shorter. Need the acoustic Mr. Soul with Neil and Stills from Woodstock? Got a video of it. Need a CSNY recording of Only Love Can Break Your Heart? Check. Even the "alternate mixes" of the songs from the first album may turn out to be the same mixes from the first release (I haven't checked that yet), and the first issue of the Archives Post states that a recreated mix of Here We Are In The Years will be one of the first BD-live downloads. I'll be shocked if I Ain't Got The Blues doesn't show up on BD-live eventually, being that it's the only track from that tape that isn't already on Disc 0.

The more I spend time with this set, the more I see it as a nearly perfect representative document of this era of Neil's career.

As far as I'm concerned there are only a few legitimate complaints.

    1. Price. Yeah, this is expensive, especially if you are upgrading your home system to include Blu-ray and HDTV. But Neil has accommodated as best he could for those who want lesser versions with DVDs or CDs.

    2. Incomplete albums. With so many released tracks included, at first blush it appears to be a ripoff that none of the albums are represented in their entirety. This is clearly a business decision, not an artistic decision, and whether it was Neil's on his own, or whether Reprise forced this concession, it is a wise business decision. You can't kill the cash cow of album sales (especially upgraded reissues) just because an artist wants completeness in his box set. This forces the completist fans to buy the reissued albums, which appear to be forthcoming, on BD or another format. Greedy hand? Perhaps, but a smart move that I can't really begrudge too much.

Practically all other complaints about this set are born of ignorance, unsubstantiated personal expectations, or envy. Neil is not holding anything back on this set. There simply DON'T EXIST many unreleased recordings from this era. Sorry that you've already had bootlegs of 2/3 of the "unreleased" stuff on here. That's not Neil's problem. I have my own disappointments based on unrealistic expectations. I thought the sound quality would be higher on some of the tracks, only to find that the bootlegs I've had probably have a common source with Neil's (It Might Have Been being one example). I've always wanted to hear what L.A. sounded like from 1968, but I guess Neil never recorded it back then. Oh well.

I've only just begun to love this set. My wife is calling the box, "Dave's fourth son, Neil." I think we'll be spending a lot of time together this summer....

  51. Folks,
The frustration is valid, after 20+ years of waiting its hard to have to wait a little longer, but lets keep some perspective - ARCHIVES GUY has been an amazing sport and a great help to all - he is here voluntarily and represents an incredible source of assitance to all. He should not be subject to people's frustration about marketing, packaging, content complaints or any complaints for that matter ... we all want him to stick around and he's been amazingly gracious ... further, no other artist has been as thoughful as Neil to provide a venue to express feedback (much of which was incorporated - mps downloads, mix and match, CD sets, ect...) and ask questions ... Thrasher has been generous in hosting the conversations, dealing with maximum traffic, and all the requesite expenses and headaches associated with being a host. This is a privledged time to be a Neil fan and all of us will eventually get to experience the Archives .. so lets give a collective cheer to Neil, Archives Guy, and Thrasher and try to hold back on the complaints, especially when speaking with AG.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Amen to that. This site (and AG) has been invaluable over these past few weeks. I wouldn't have bought the Blu-Ray edition without all of the answers I've gotten here.

  53. glad the coupon helped :)

I opened mine when I got home. The download card and the Canterbury discs were missing, so I called 866-430-6230 (from the FAQ site) and the very pleasant lady I spoke with was very helpful and knew exactly what was wrong. She said I should get my stuff in about 2-3 weeks.

I'm currently enjoying the Loner/Cinnamon Girl video from Cafe Feenjon and the Fillmore East, and then it goes into the clip where he shows the guy in the park how to play Cinnamon Girl. This is fantastic!

  56. Hey Sugarmtn,

I am using a Yahama RX-663 receiver connected via HDMI to a Samsung BDP-1500 Bluray player and dont seem to be experiencing issue of missing first second or two of each song. Only have preview disc so far, but should have my bluray set in next day or two and will have a closer check.

    Cheers,

  58. Archives? Neil Young? Oh yeah, Neil Young, two times front row last weekend. In between Neil and the giant Magnatone. That was truly amazing. Nothing sounds better than live Neil. Not even Blu-Ray. Allthough I have never heard that one. Just did read that it still hasn't been delivered... Neil is God? I don't believe in god, but if there really should be something that comes close to the definition of a god than it should be light. Please check out the YouTube videos from the shows of last weekend. Neil is all light. Because he wears a white shirt and cheap digital instruments can’t handle light. Amazing. Neil Young finally has become a God. The Light. The two shows were super good and generated the greatest form of happiness. Unfortunately it didn’t last that long because I almost got killed the day after. I don’t know why. It just happened out of the blue on the street. That's life in 2009. Archives??? Delivery??? Glue??? Complaining????? I don’t know. Just relax and enjoy. B.S.M. (still alive)

  60. Well, as of Wednesday June 10 here on the West Coast in Abbotsford, BC there is no Archives Set.
June 1 was the e-mail notice for shipment so here's hoping by
    this Week??

I know some in Ont. have received theirs from neil dot com so it is out there....somewhere!!

Wouldn't you know it...our TV Blew yesterday so right now I may as well be waiting 'cause I couldn't see them the way they should be seen...TV Repair coming Friday.

Thank goodness we got the extended warranty on that and actually quite surprised the Archives didn't show up today seeing as I couldn't watch them the way they should be anyway...wouldn't
    that be typical?? lol

  61. Love the set, but hate the pricing. It's not that I don't think the Blu Ray is worth the $299+$22 shipping I paid to pre-order it and get it from NY.com, it just really, really, really pisses me off that today I go onto the web and see a website selling it for $234 with free shipping. I would think pre-ordering it direct would have given it an at least close to lowest selling price not the $88 more I paid. I now also read someone got it from Barnes and Noble for $209. So I guess I actually overpaid by $113. Well I guess maybe I didn't overpay by that much, the free bonus 7" single I got should be worth about $8. That was the last time I ever pre-order anything, especially from ny.com!!!!

  62. PunkDavid, that was a BRILLIANT post. I hope you sent it to the Rust List as well. You really hit the Neil on the head. (No, that wasn't actually funny, but I typed it anyway!)

I also laughed pretty hard re: the PS3 not being a gaming console but rather an NYA console, because that's EXACTLY how I see it... I was even hoping somebody more creative than I could whip up some "NYA PLAYER" stickers or something to stick on PS3s!

  63. If you ordered internationally and got an email, as many of us did, saying your set shipped on June 1st, you've got NO cause for complaint. That was the beginning of last week. Once it's shipped, it's no longer under the control of Warner Brothers. Whether it takes one, two, three weeks, or longer, is down to the shipping company and whatever happens in customs, plus its journey from there to your home.

    Get some bleeding perspective.

  64. Thrasher,
Here's a cool personal story and a tip for those who haven't bought the archives yet -

I had been too caught up in things to get a Blue Ray set-up and figured I'd wait until I had the player to order the BD box set ... i guess it was a combination of worrying about the cost, then some procrastination and doubts about if it would get delayed again ... then my father-in-law got sick right before the pre-order deadline and I was too focused on these other things to order my set by the pre-order date. Then I read it had sold out and I was pretty bummed out ... nevertheless, when I saw a few people venting at AG, I posted something tonight: At 6/10/2009 07:04:00 PM (sorry forgot to sign it) to the effect of lets appreciate AG and all that have been helpful in this process and lets be patient, we'll get the archives at some point ... later I read that someone had gone to Borders and found it there for 40% off I decided I had to give it a shot. So at 9:30PM I checked the link, sure enough there was a 40% coupon, I then called the closest Borders and the guy told me they had one set left and they would put the set aside for me and apply the coupon (which expires tonight) as long as I was there before the 10pm close. I frantically jumped into my car, took the 20+ minute drive (at 85 mph) and arrived at 9:58pm, walked up calmly asked for the set, asked for the coupon to be applied, paid $209.99 + 14.70 (tax) and walked out with the set for $224.69 . I tried to buy a DVD set also to re-sell at 40% off to a rustie but they were completely out ... when I asked them if I could apply the coupon to a back order, here's what he told me - He said, they can't apply the coupon to a back order BUT, he said they email discounts on DVD sets (which includes BD sets) all the time and 40% off every couple of weeks. To apply the coupon I had to apply for the Borders Rewards cards which amounted to simply giving them my email address ... for those still looking to buy the BD and/or DVD sets it a pretty amazing deal ... it sounded like they might have more sets in their system ('ie' warehouse or other stores) .. if not, I'd assume there will be a back order and the discounts should recur... the coupon seems to allow for two sets ... and they said the cost chain wide is $349.99 or $209.99 after the discount ...
Anyhow, I hope others will benefit and many thanks to the person who posted this info tonight! Somehow I can't help but think that what goes around comes around and being grateful rather than complaining helped put this set into my hands at a very affordable price.

  65. Well, I am English and luckily moved to US last year, ordering the Archives from Amazon last November (they tried to charge 323 but reduced to 279 when I moaned at them.
While I console myself with the fabulous Archives, delivered last week, I will not be seeing Neil perform in Nottingham on the 23rd. This time last year it would have been 8 miles from my house!
I will not be able to watch the BBC (bad broadcasting, low graders) coverage of Glastonbury.
My ex will be there but always claimed NY had 'a winey voice'.
By the way, did you know that Neil Young scored the winning goal in the 1969 FA Cup final for Man City against Leicester?
    Don't be denied!

  67. Can anyone advise me - is there a way to take the audio from the Canterbury DVD and get it into Itunes?
I am hoping to get the songs onto my ipod and the mp3 download did not include Canterbury - I'm not complaining ... it was a really nice extra, and would love to have it on the go.
    Thanks for any help.

  69. I just wanted to thank Archives Guy for taking the time to post here and help educate us on the technical stuff. I ended up buying the Blu-Ray set today after reading all the posts from the past week. I originally came here hoping for more info to make a choice between buying the dvd or cd versions...

  70. As someone posted here another day there is a *CHANCE* you could potentially order the Blu-Ray set for $190 shipped in the second half of July from deepdiscount.com - they are supposed to have a 20% off sale then and right now the box is only $238 and they always offer free shipping (but it's also out of stock at the moment)...

  77. Is the BD-Live working? I got my Blu-Ray boxset yesterday and checked for downloadables on each of the timelines and each time there was a msg to say that there was nothing available for download :-(

Got the MP3s straight away. No issue there.

So far, so amazing. The sound quality is stunning. I like many others have listened to the 1st 4 albums to death and thought I knew them intimately, but I was hearing things I'd never heard before last night. The clarity of the backing vocals in particular is stunning.

    Keep on rockin' in ......

No serious, I recieved a Canterbury DVD with my NYA BD set ... was I supposed to receive a CD? I'm happy to have the DVD but can't figure out if music can somehow be downloaded onto my itunes / ipod.
Thanks anyone for any help on this.
I know, I'm a technical neophite. probably not an ideal quality to have as a Neil Young fan these days.

People out there buying multiple copies of releases for whatever reason, know that you're very likely contributing to the shortage for others.

  86. To PunkDavid:

There is plenty of unreleased recordings from the era not on Archives. All you have to do is look at the list in the back of the book. Studio run throughs of The Bridge and Winterlong, the 1969 Cantebury show with the acoustic Everybody's Alone, pro recordings of Flying on the Ground and Expecting to Fly from '70 shows, demo of High School Graduation, Expecting to Fly with excised verse, '67 version of Whiskey Boot Hill, Look at All the Things, Cellar Door '70, Royce Hall '71, et al.
