Toast: New Unreleased Crazy Horse Album

OK, so the date of the post is April 1 so take it FWIW.

Over on N Y Times comes word of an upcoming release called "Toast". Named after a defunct recording studio, "Toast" is "perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs."

"Toast" will be the first NYA 'Special Edition' in a new series of unreleased albums.

So, go figure? Obviously, the announcement raises a whole series of questions which we won't even begin to attempt to answer.

With regards to The Archives? Let the speculation continue.

If this is a joke, we guess we'll just call it "Burnt Toast".

Thanks Simpson!

  1. The history is kind of right. Neil did record extensively with Crazy Horse prior to Are You Passionate? and DID come up with only Goin' Home, he even said that the sessions fell apart because there was really no chemistry with the band at the time.

But I still think this is a cruel prank. They would make more hoopla over a major release like this than a poorly written little column. And "Toast"? Come on. Worst. Name. Ever.

If it is real, though, I'll have a good laugh.

  2. Well, the Toast title was given in late 2000/early 2001 and the fact that the band was recording at Toast studios was known. I have no doubt that what we're reading about exists. I'm just not sure we'll hear it anytime soon.

  5. It was posted on NY times before April 1........
I saw it the day before from Amsterdam....
And it feels real for me. If it's true he might possibly come to Europe this summer with Crazy Horse....

  8. I read this on NY Times on Sunday 30th so i wouldn't have thought its an April Fools Joke.

  12. "My blue-eyed woman is a healer to me.
    Without that woman, I'm history.
My blue-eyed woman is a love ghost.
    Without that woman, I'm toast."

Can't wait for some crispy crazy "Toast".
I have the feeling that the rough Crazy Horse versions of some of the songs on "Are You Passionate" could be really exciting. After all the songs on "Are You Passionate" are not that bad if you try to listen well. There's some distortion in sound between Neil and the MG's that makes this album a not so favourite among NY fans. But then again you gotta understand it's Neil coming up with some kind of weird experiment we have to live with and appreciate.

    BECAUSE SOUND MATTERS

  14. I've seen Neil play 7 times now, twice on the last tour, and one performance that will always stick out for me is "When I Hold You in my Arms" with Crazy Horse at the Roskilde Festival in 2001. Neil playing piano in the verses and then turning around to play some licks on old black after the chorus was really cool and sounded great. I like the "Are You Passionate" version of that song, but I know I'd LOVE a Crazy Horse version.
    Bring on the Toast!!!

  15. The average person reading of the album release on Neil's site and later finding out that the announcement was an April Fools joke would think Neil was an ass.

Neil knows this, so I doubt it's a joke.

  16. I doubt it is an April Fools joke. I don't think he could be bothered with that.

The other thing is that everything that has been published on the times in the last year or two has been accurate.

On 1/4 there was an article on www.uncut.co.uk stating it had been confirmed by an NY publicist.

Looks like it is legit, but makes me wonder about how the archive volumes will turn out.

  17. Wasn't the original announcement about the Archives made April 1, 1988? Maybe we will enjoy Toast in 2028....

  18. I may be in the minority, but I really like Are You Passionate (aside from "Let's Roll" which a dated embarrassment.) If Toast is going to include Gateway and Standing In The Light Of Love, all the better.

As for the possibility of ... "a new series of unreleased albums", I'm in heaven if this comes true. It would be a great excuse for Neil to put out the alternate early version of Tonight's The Night with the between song talk as mentioned in Shakey.

    ReplyDelete
  19. that would be awesome if that alternate Tonight's the Night was released. David Briggs sounded pissed that that version wasn't released

    ReplyDelete
  20. if David said...Neil, it's me David. Would you listen?

  21. Toast will most certainly contain "Gateway of Love" which for some unknown reason was assessed as not being good enough for "Are You Passionate"

I guess "toast" is Neil's (and CH) attempt at burning out lest he fade away.
