Lyrics Analysis of "Ordinary People"

With all the excitement around the upcoming release of "Ordinary People", it seems to be an appropriate topic for the Neil Post of the Moment.

Back in 1993, Thrasher began posting thoughts on Rust which finally culminated in 1995 with a complete lyrics analysis of "Ordinary People".

Just for kicks, we went back and gave it another read which brought a bit of a chuckle, especially where we called OP "Neil's Guernica - a masterpiece". One can only wonder how close or how far the new version of OP will stray from the 1988 performances?

In the meanwhile, here's a taste of the epic "Ordinary People".

  1. To me - this is the highlight. sums it all up:

    "Downtown people,
Trying to make their way to work.
    Everyday people,
Some are saints, and some are jerks.
    Hard workin' people,
Stopping for a drink on the way to work.
    Alcoholic people,
Yeah Yeah, they're taking it one day, one day at a time."

cant wait to hear this almost 20yrs later.

  2. I heard OP for the first and only time at the 88' Pier 84 show in NYC. It was one of only 700 times I have been moved to tears at a Neil show - utterly sensational. Gives me chills to look at the YouTube clip shot a couple weeks earlier. I hope some of the lyrics are updated - I would hate for folks to be scratching their heads over Lee Iacocca People! There is so much territory he could cover - lets hope it is the 18 minute song and not the thirteen minute song- then he could skewer some worthy targets as only Neil can do!
